New tires & tubes

Shop charged $100 to do 4 tires. Total cost - $ 737.00. Can't wait to drive car. Old tires were dry rotted and bead cracked on two of them when they were removed so it's a good thing I got rid of them even though there was tread left. The only remaining work to be done are the worn valve guides, but for a while, I'll continue to add some oil when needed as the car runs so well I hesitate to remove the head.
 
I took an old MGTF hub that had good splines but bad bearing fit and bored it out to match the spin balancer shaft OD. I made a couple of trips to fit the hub to the balancer shaft so it would be a good snug fit. Then I also bored the same size hole in an old knock off and I give this to the tire place when I have my tires balanced. Now they have a unit with the proper tapers that fits their machines shaft. They put the unit on the balancer, put the tire on, spin on the knock off then lock it down with their large nut. The tire man says it works great and I should get it patented! I have let several of our clubs members use it and it seems to fit most balancers. Food for thought

I did something similar but as I did not have a lathe (or much else in the way of metal working equipment) I jacked up the rear of the TR3, put the knock-off on w/o a wheel, started the engine with the car in gear and, using a jackstand as a tool rest and a file as a tool, cut the hole.

I probably looked a bit like a Darwin Award candidate but it worked a treat.

Great idea. Too bad I threw away my bent spline. Maybe my expert friend has a spare one I can give to the shop that did the work. On second thought - maybe my bent one is not such a good idea as the spline itself wobbled.
