MGB New tires ----Question

We've decided that it's time for all new tires on the MGB. We're hoping for suggestions about what make, model, size, etc. we should think about. Waiting for replies... Thanks.

I'll admit that I'm using whatever the tire place had in the correct size (175/70R14) -- they've proved plenty decent for the last two years. I figure that modern radials, even the cheap ones, are still very good tires. I drive in a relatively spirited manner, and find them perfectly adequate.

I'm sure some folks will be along with more performance-oriented choices.

Vredesteins on the wifes 72 B. Great tires with good handling characteristics, excellent wet road braking and added comfort in the ride. I wouldn't change brands after buying these. They do have a directional tread, you can only move them front to back, no crossing. If you buy them, make sure their mounted with the direction in mind. PJ

I have Vredestein Sprint Radials on my MGA. 165-HR-15. They look "more vintage" that the Vredestein Quatrac tire in Paul's picture. I rotate them all around. They've taken huge abuse since I have only run on a race track. They handle well and are very reliable, very predictable.

I've gotten three seasons on them and think they will last this season as well. The HR runs about $119. The same tire with a lower speed rating (90 mph, I think) runs about $95.

One more vote for the Vredestein Sprints.

So...it appears that the size of choice varies. What are the pros/cons of 165, 175, and 185's??

Gary, The tires on the wifes B are 165s. They look like they belong on the car and rim. Everyone has their own opinion and according to them, their opinion is the correct one. The car originally came with 155s. With 165s the speedometer is very close to where it should be, the car looks as it should and it gets 30 MPG. PJ

Thanks Paul...looks good and makes sense.

Almost everyone will date out their tires before they wear them out. I like the Dunlop SP20FE ? in A 185-70-14. I Got them from the tire rack for around $75 each. The MGB is at the mountain cabin so the SP20fe is from memory. Good tread pattern, appear to be a smaller looking 185 and handle great wet or dry. If the budget would allow I would probably go for the 165-14 Verdesteins also. I like a smaller section tire. This Dunlop is a very good second pick. Bob

On my MGA, I was trying to get as close as reasonable to the original tire size. The rules I run under say the car is supposed to be set up as it was raced "in the day", so 1959.

At 165 the width is a little wider - about 5.5 inches vs. 5 inches. The 70 is the aspect ratio height vs. width. So 70 is a taller tire than say a 60. Again, I went with the 70 to get closer to original. I think originally, the tires had an aspect ratio of 80.

The 15 is the wheel size.

On the MGA with these tires, my mph should be just about what the speedometer says. A different aspect ratio or a different wheel size will throw that off.
