new starter

Thanks for the help Bill,
I got my new starter from Ted a few minutes ago. The much smaller size surprised me but I understand the why and how. Ted has a great price and as set as I was to keep the original I am glad I went this way. The cost of the new solenoid alone was nearly half of the new one and after the cost of replacing the other worn parts there is no way it would make sense.

The old pinion is not too bad but I will check the ring gear carefully.

Tommy, there just ain't s'pposed ta be them there metal shavins' in that there drive unit. Good time to replace it.

Man, I just can't get used to those little Furrin starters!

My local shop rebuilds my TR3 units for $80.00...I guess he works too cheap!

I probably would not have done it either except I don't trust the sources of the extremely important brush springs to supply quality parts. Just because they might look like the original springs does not mean they will stand the heat and not loose their spring temper. Something I found to be the biggest single starter problem even when these cars were new.

Please, gentlemen, indulge and educate me.
So does this mean replace the starter in toto or
can just this worn gear be replaced?

I might make a good guess, but interested in what
you have to say, please.

Thanks.

Hi 2Wrench, Yes the gear is very simple to replace if you can source one. However, The new small starters have significantly more torque than the original ones. The cost on the other hand exceeds the rebuild cost of a standard starter. It just depends upon the individuals choice.--Fwiw--Keoke
