New Soft-top, or reupholster cracked window?

the rear window on my TR-4 soft-top is cracked and the crack is getting bigger. Overall, the top is in good shape, with the exception of the broken rear window, and oxidized side windows.

Have any of you folks had the windows replaced by a reupholster shop, or did you bite the bullet and buy a new top? I have installed TR-6 tops on my own, but never a T4-top.

I need to check local upholstery shops in the San Jose area, but before I do, I wanted to check the forum on feedback on this.

Get estimates both ways. Many a good shop will do either, depending on your top condition and budget. They will also be able to determine if the top is starting to dry rot and you may be wasting money by fixing it.

Get two shops to provide estimates if you wish. It will never hurt.
 
there is a thread on 6-pack where a guy repaired his own for an all up cost of about $25. Might be worth a look.

for a temporary repair,try some super glue on the split. hobby shops sell "zap" in different formulas. bonds plastic very well.remember to install the top "warmed" if possible. they flex and stretch much better when warm.

For the side window oxidation you can get some Megiers (sp) plastic cleaner and polish. It takes a bit of elbow grease, or at least an orbital polisher of the type you polish paint with, and you will clean the oxidation off.

I am in the process of doing this on my own top, and it is working well.
