New show on History Channel-"Dogfights"

One for the aviation buffs, but is anyone else watching this show?

Obviously it's about fighter airplanes doing their jobs-fighting other planes! There are plenty of interviews with the pilots involved, as well as other military and aircraft experts (all of which is really interesting anyway), as well as great vintage footage of the planes in flight. The show covers everything from WW1 (or at lest it did in the pilot episode) up to Vietnam.

The Unique Selling Point is the re-enactment of these fights- all done in absolutely stunning CGI animation. It's hyper realistic....and fantastic to watch. Really thrilling. Last night was about the Korean War-imagine being in the cockpit, or having a ringside seat as a pair of F-86s chase a MiG-15 down on the deck and across a Chinese airbase....

Recommended!

Been watching it non-stop, emailed them twice to recommend a dog fight they show.

mehheh. Glued to it... Met Steve Richie once. Only ever heard "rumors" about R. Olds. I didn't get to the 8th TAC Fighter Wing until May of '73. Never saw a MiG in all the time I was there. Pro'lly just as well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

So far I've seen five or six of 'em. Great perspective on "what it takes".

I don't have it I guess... History channel is showing Engineering an Empire "the Persians" right now.

Sorry, Kenny- I should've mentioned that its on Friday nights, 9pm central. I've caught a few reruns here and there. For some reason they keep showing "heck Over Hanoi".

As a former (someday recidivist) flight simmer, I find the CGI bits just awesome.

Oh, thanks... I thought you meant "right now". I'll try and catch it next week.

I think it's kind of neat. They've had some friends of mine on there, from WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam.
(Incidentally, I was a participant only in the last one of those mentioned!} /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just picked up a hardback book titled "Dogfight" that compares and constrasts military aircraft from WWI on. Also has accounts of real aerial combats....about 300 pages, most illustrated.

Got it at Barnes and Noble for about $15.

ISBN-13: 97-0-7607-8169-2
ISBN 10: 0-7607-8169-9

I've seen three episodes and loved every minute! I wonder which flight sim they are using for the recreations. It's certainly better than those stupid recreation shows that use the Rome video game. Talk about low budget!

Shoulda figger'd... so Olds DID have his gear down?!? Poor li'l gomer hadn't a clue.../ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

... we'll "discuss"...

Snicker.......Doc, this is an instance when flying "dirty" may have a double meaning! And, Gomer was generally clueless anyway. Most of our losses were from SAM's or AAA.
But, that's a discussion for another time.

As stated: never saw a MiG... PLENTY of Trip'l-A. Never actually SAW th' SAM either... but my 'nads claimed it was there! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

OH!! And about that Immelmann... Mebbe I'm goin' back the way I came but I have a MUCH IMPROVED view!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif
