new seats for 77

Hi all. I just bought a 77mgb and this winter plan to redo the interior among other things. I was wondering where you can by new seats, (adjustable ones). Also what is the best manual for restoration? Thanks

I recommend the Bentley's manual, and a Hayne's as backup. If you're looking for aftermarket seats, many people have fitted Miata seats.

Yup, Miata seats or Fiero seats. There's not too many seats that fit in a B. But what do you mean by adjustable? The stock ones have reclining backs and go back and forth... what else do you want?

I'd consider Miata seats
Way better than the MG seats Ive got /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif

Do the miata seats happen to use the same rails as the B's?

ahhhh k

Can you do the appropriate rail modifications yourself and not get a engineers certificate?
Or is it something you need to be "qualified" to do?

I've never done it but I hear all you need to do is drill holes in the proper place and bolt the seat right in. I'll try to find someone who has done it.

One easier solution that might make you happy is to provide a little bit of rake to the seat, including the bottom. I am going to install new leather seats this winter and plan to install a wedge under the rails instead of the flat spacer to lift the front of the seat about an inch or so. I came upon this idea when I installed new carpeting and discovered that the back bolt in the rails seated just fine while the front bolts seemed to be pulling up more. I thought about how I adjust a eight way seat, realizing that I like to tilt the seat higher in the front and lower in the back when I drive a car equiped with such luxury. While this would not be "adjustable", it will fit my needs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have been thinking about a good way to do this and pretty much concluded that the only way I can do it is with a wedge shaped piece of hardwood. If anyone knows of a better way, we'd all like to hear about it? Gerry M makes a replacement spacer out of a non-wood product, but I haven;t ever seen a wedge shaped one.

I can only suggest you measure your space and go find something that you like and will fit in your space. As the floor pans are level in the "B" bending the seat slides flat on anyone should give you what you want. For those having a look at this my TR6 has 1996 leather Saturn SC seats and all I had to do was straighten out the front bracket and take their seat belts off. Wayne

My vote is for fiero seats. Very comfortable and suportive in turns.

I would imagine that Fiero seats are rather hard to come by in Australia.
The Honda S-2000 has seats that are roughly the same dimensions as the B, and are pretty decent, for factory seats.

Fiero seats modified to fit the MG's original seat holes - you don't want to drill new holes in your floors!

What about those imported "Suffolk" seats (Moss Motors). Granted they're not cheap, but they look to be pretty good.

I just did mine. I had Miata seats in it when I bought it and hated them since they are higher than stock and wind tears your head off even worse than it does with stock. SO, I went to Prestige Automotive in the UK www.prestigeautotrim.com and found I could get replacement seat covers with whatever color piping you want to match the outside. For the foam and webbing, any of the Moss distributors has the stuff. Take the old guys apart and assess the damage. Webbing will need replacing for sure. For good pix of the whole thing go to www.victorisbritish.com and you will see how the seats fit together. Pretty simple to reupolster. Just dirty and time consuming but you would not have British if you did not have the time. It cost $30 bucks to ship from the UK but no tax and delivery in about a week. I bought a deluxe carpet set from them also. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif

Fadler,

I also reskinned my originals with leather from Prestige. I also got new foams and webbing. They turned out very nice and comfortable. I will attach a pix.

I went through the effort of getting new foams and seat covers for the seats in my '77 B. The instructions that came with the seat coves were very straight forward and once I got the hang of it, it was actually a simple operation. Did the work on my seats solo. Then rebuilt two more sets of seats for others in the car club. Went much quicker with an assistant.

I was thinking about getting these Fiero seats for my 'B and installing them as is ... I can see it now... these seats with a nice furry dash, fuzzy dice mirrors, and frame the windows with those little fuzzy ball things... oh and let's not forget a mini-disco ball for the shifter knob!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

And back to reality... I really wouldn't mind putting Fiero seats into my 'B, but I'd have to put new covers on them before even putting them into the car if they looked like that... hmmm... on second thought I'd be tempted to put them in as is just for a laugh for maybe a week or two /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
