New points problem

Offline
Of all these years of installing points I ran into a new problem yesterday. I just bought a 58 100/6 that had been stored for a couple of years. Points were corroded up so I replaced them and checked for spark. Nothing, Pulled them back out, lightly buffed the points and reinstalled. Only a light intermittent spark. Pull points again. Noticed a light film on the base of the points so I thought not grounding, sanded the bottom side of the base and BAM, good spark. First time I have had that issue with new points so keep that in mind.

Since I've switched to a Pertronix unit I never worry about points anymore, but I do know what you're talking about.

When I was using points I've noticed they seem oily, must be part of the mfg process. Routinely I used a strip of common paper and ran it through the points and was always amazed at what came out.

Good point though, (pun intended).
