Hello Everyone,

I just purchased a 1980 TR7 convertible and wanted to see what types of fluids you prefer to use in the tranny, rear end, brakes, etc.?

Thanks,

YAY!!! Another Wedgie owner!

Here are my choices:

Transmission oil: Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid
Rear end: Lucas 85-90 weight (Though any brand specified for "hypoid" gears will do.)
Brakes: Castrol/Girling GT-LMA

You'll no doubt get some differing views on this, but these are fairly common choices.

Pictures?

For street use, the Castrol LMA is fine for brakes.

I'd use a fairly thick motor oil. 15w40 or 20w50.

For the rear end, for the streat, 90w gear oil of any "decent" quality is fine.

For the tranny though, be careful. There are some folks with strong opinions on what the LT77 needs. I use Castrol ATF -- and I'm pretty sure that is the "accepted" solution for it. The LT77 does have oiling problems and it is critical to use the right fluid.

Welcome from another one of the "wedgeheads!"

For my transmission, I use any brand of ATF, Dexron III I can get.

One other note on tranny oiling...NEVER, NEVER tow a wedge flat without disconnecting the driveshaft. If you do, you'll be looking at a major overhaul.

Yep - tranny's a peculiar unit. The Pennzoil I mentioned was recommended by a number of Wedge owners. I've used it in mine, and am very satisfied. Here's what to look for, if you want it:

Hi, welcome to the forum. I own two wedgies, a hardtop and a convertible. I use Redline D4 ATF in my tranny. It costs about the same as the Penzoil Synchromesh transmission fluid. I'm still amazed that you can get auto supplies from Amazon.com.

I've been told to make sure to only use GL4, not GL5, in the rear differential.

I'd caution you to make sure what ever you decide to put into the gearbox is NOT a synthetic oil.

I've used the Pennzoil referenced above with no further problems.

Enjoy her!

Thanks to all of you for the great information. I really appreciate it!!
