Time for a PARTY! My 60th birthday! And in the city of my youth!! Time to go home.....

New Orleans, Louisiana (by BMCNOed)
16th Annual New Orleans British Car Day show.
The show is scheduled for Saturday, March 25th, 2006 at the same place as last year, Delgado - City Park Campus. The campus was not flooded in the hurricane and WE ARE STILL ON!! All British cars and bikes are welcome. Judging will be People's Choice and there will be an awards banquet Saturday evening. We will be using the same host hotel as last year, the Hampton Inn - Elmwood. Call (800)426-7866 or (504)733-5646 and ask for the British Car Show rate. On Friday evening, March 24th we will be hosting a reception with refreshments for our out of town guests at the hotel.

We've got it on our schedule. And N.O. is Janet's hometown, and my family's, so we're looking forward to it as well.

Shall we walk down to the Radio Shack one night, Mckey? See if we can 'pinch' any door mats?

Well then, I'd better come as well. Tony, I've about three years on you, but grew up in Belle Chasse, moving to the city in early 60s. Wonder if we've crossed paths. Lived/breathed Delta Region SCCA 60-70s, worked at Sports Cars Inc, then Gulf South Imports, and finally at the port, Continental Cars.
In any case, I plan to be down in the TR6 for the March event. Before retiring was always travelling it seemed when it was on.

Right now I'm planning my first visit to N'Awlins since the hurricane - my cousin is getting married over in Marrerro New Year's Eve!

I'll be there then as well. A friend's grandaughter is getting married on the 30th in Hammond.

DA-UM, Paul! When we get plans solidified, I'll give you a PM...maybe we can get together for a beer!

A very good friend of mine live in Baton Rouge. I make an annual pilgrimage to see her and spend a few days in Nawlins. I didn't make it this year, because of Brian's wedding (he insisted I be there!) - had planned on a fall trip but Katrina messed that up.

I'm tentatively planning to take Emma down there, leaving here the 21st, coming back Sunday.

The wife and I both have family in N.O. whom we haven't seen since before Katrina. Most of them have been displaced across the lake and elsewhere. We plan to go early the week before the show to visit them and some old friends. If anyone would like to hook up down there before the show, let me know.

We're doing the same, Mickey...haven't been there since either...& I need to visit my aunt (wife of my uncle who died night hurricane hit) & a few cousins....gotta figure out where to stay as I'll probably trailer an MG.

We'll plan that next week over lunch!

Mickey

Man, I haven't been to Nawlins since I was 18. I want to go too, but Have they actually rebuilt a good bit of it by now?

Well, we have to be back in Birminghma 28th for "grandparenting classes" (can you believe that)...so we probably won't bring a car - may just fly in

Wow, I think my grandparents did pretty good without classes! I think the going sentiment then was spoil your grandkids more than you did your kids. Worked out pretty well for them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Still, is New Orleans all fixed back up now? I've heard only very sparse parts are so far. Anyone?

I guess the press has failed to illustrate the devastation. Was there a few weeks ago, driving around not only the city to visit old haunts, but to the Coast. Probably 80% of the city is empty, with nothing but ruined houses lining the streets. No traffic lights, no traffic, no businesses, no people, dogs, cats, birds, squirrels, or insects. Still, among the people who were there, there seemed a good spirit to get back on track; guess not much else they can do.
I plan to make the event, but suggest that if you come, be sure to arrange for lodging in advance, and understand that you'll not be running down to the local store for a tank of gas, bottle of water, or po-boy. Metairie is up and running nearly normal, but that's about as close to Delgado as one can find functioning retail of any sort. The Quarter is pretty much going again, and up around Carrollton is sporadic, but mostly down.
Hope this helps, and hope everyone still makes the trip.

Yeah, that's home for us, too. We are going to try to go this year, but the diocese will be electing a new bishop on the 18th, and the process may spill over to the 25th. Whether we go or not will have to wait 'til the last minute.

My wife grew up near Tulane University, and I lived there a number of years. Both of us have family who lived in Lakeview, and their homes are gone. One home backed up to the 17th St. Canal, not far from where it gave in.

Anyway, we want to go see, and if we don't make the show, we'll go another time. One thing's for sure: N'awlins as we knew it is gone...

Mickey

I'll say, Micvkey...the streets I wandered around on in my early teens aren't ever going to be the same...but, gotta go back 1 more time!

OK - Here's what's cookin':

Forum member Paul Johnson and I have been chattin', and we're planning to meet on Thursday evenin', the 23rd, at 6:00, at the New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood Co., 6920 Veterans' Hwy., Metarie, for shrimp po-boys (and Dixie/Abita beer). I know that's before the show, but if anyone can join us, let us know on this thread.
