New on eBay

Hi Konrad,
On a Healey, if they say "a little rust" and "perfect for restoration" you can be almost certain that there is a whole lot more rust that cannot be seen which will seriously weaken the structure. The car that you are looking at would likely require an additional $20,000 USD or more to make it into a nice driver.

I am aware of that. But still, the car doesn't look so bad. I'll see how will the bidding go on.
Anyone some more comments?

Regards

Hmmmmm!! If it has been garaged for 30 years, how did it get in the state it is in? Low mileage doesn't mean anything IMHO unless there is some proof. Not sure I would want to buy it unless I had seen it or got someone to examine it.
Poland is a long way away!!

Old [and rusty] on eBay

I'm no expert but this looks like a dog to me and not worth the money it will take to turn into something worthwhile...I believe you can do better. For a lot less than the total cost of this car, shipping, and restoration, not to mention time and headaches, you can buy a nice driver.

Re: Old [and rusty] on eBay

might be due to the salt they use to melt ice on the roads causing the rust despite it being garaged!

Re: Old [and rusty] on eBay

Gotta love that description. "Fabulous original condition perfect for restoration". I'd sure hate to see one in fair condition!

Re: Old [and rusty] on eBay

Hi Konrad:
I'm in agreement with the other postings, considering the eventual cost of the car, shipping and restoration you can probably do much better. For comparisons, you may want to check out Collecter Car Trader On Line, Hemmings Motor News Online and even a dealer in New York, https://gullwingmotorcars.com
Good luck with your search and hope this information is helpful.

Re: Old [and rusty] on eBay

Hard to say that this car is worth more than 5,000 in its current state. You are looking at at least $20k to $25K to restore it with your own labor and decent paint. Unless you lived in the same area as the car and were planning on doing all the work yourself, I would not touch this car.
Given your location, you truly need to find the best car you can afford. A 12-15K driver would be much better.

Yep Konrad, that is one rusty bugger stay away from him take the advice provided and keep looking.--Fwiw---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Hey Konrad, I am a rare poster but I know what you are going through. You got to have a Healey. I looked at the pictures on ebay. and it seems that this car is being presented as a parts car but you would have to take the guy's word that the parts are all there. There is rust showing in the picture with the right (passenger side ) view minus the fender and I think someone would have to look at this for you. The front shroud and back to the windshield does not look that bad. the picture showing the rear with the rear shourd is suspect. Konrad don't buy this as a basis for a restoration. If you want to buy this get it for parts and with you being in Poland, don't pay more than $5000 US at that and only if somebody on this board can look at it for you. Konrad resist the urge you are feeling to get that Healey, be patient and you can get something decent.

Konrad, follow the advice of your friends in the States. We want you to have a happy Healey experience, a dream come true...not a nightmare. Resist the urge to buy this car...soon there will be another, better opportunity. Just look at the bright side...you still have all your money!

I also agree with the others, unless you have a really good source for all the necessary parts, tools and time to complete this one, stay away. You, if like me , want to DRIVE one and not just work on it until you lose intrest in it. The right one will find you! Good Luck, it will be worth it, half the fun is dreaming anyway!

conrad,i agree with most of what my fello bcf friends have said with the exception of doing business with "gullwingmotors".i think it was shakespere who said" {to be foreworned is to be forearmed}stay away from these people, its a gipsy type operation with the worst of the auto industry touted as being "one owner all original ready to be restored"ive been out there its the dregs, yes go on thier sight,if you think the computer images appear shaby, well you cant even begin to imagine what this junk looks like up close and personal, once in a great while they may have some kind of find, but they dont even know what it is!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif

First in Poland you will have cheap labor to fix the rust and do the chroming , so consider what parts are not included that you cannot make in Poland.
shipping to Bremen is about $1000

to me its not a bad car from the pictures , if its what you want,
price is your decision , you know whats being offered in Europe

beaulieu - how can you say it is not a bad car from the pictures!!!??? this must be your brother-in-law's car. it looks like a pile of mismatched bits salvaqged from a junkyard at night and loosly assembled into the approximate shape of an Austin Healey. regarding the cost of restoration in Poland... if labor is cheap it probably means that money is expensive...aka low pay-scale, so all things remain equal for Konrad. If it's such a great car, why don't you buy it? you can probably fix it up and sell it for a handsome profit!

OK......first this car is solid, have you seen the cars offered in Europe ?
most of the cars in europe need the bottom 6-12 inches replaced because of rust.
who cares if its parts from another car ? as long as the main body has not been crashed then "other" parts will fit on it.
The price is up to the market,

but if you have a better car to offer him , then do so

That car does not look so bad to me. A car in this state is always carries risk, it is very hard to tell what is missing and you'll have to make extra effort to figure out how to put it together. The pictures could be better, some closeups of the side rails, rocker panels, and floors might clarify the rust situation. I would ask for better photos before I decided -- or find someone to take a trip to see it in person.

Healey's aren't so terribly complicated and it's not that hard to find one nearby to help you see how to put it together.

I think $5000. would be a good price for it if it is actually as described. $8500 sounds high when you consider the risk of the parts that are bound to be missing. If this were a rolling, completely assembled car in similar condition, I think $8500 would be reasonable.

Good luck, I would love to see this one back on the road. It deserves a good home to get it back together before it fades into Healey history.....
