New MGs coming out again!

Here's the local BBC coverage (I live a few miles down the road from Longbridge)

BBC Coverage

The video coverage (top right on the BBC web page) shows the new boss of MG USA making the announcement. I would imagine the hundreds of Longbridge workers who lost their pension felt sick to the stomach when they saw how this bloke seemed to gloat at the fact that they had 'lost' the pension commitments. Not a good attitude in my opinion. I know it makes good business sense but he would have been better off just not mentioning it.

Our position is to try to create a world-class car in a world-class company.

Haven't we heard that somewhere before?

Forget Plastic.... ?
How else do the "modern" Assembly Lines know how to hold the fenders to the body tubs.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ain't that the truth?

Guess I must have been out of the loop too long, I just heard the story on NPR this morning /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. If what they make bears any resemblance to the MGB or MGF I'd buy one.

or the Z's i think those look good too

hmmm... yeah... that speech was inconsiderate of the workers that lost their jobs. He'd have done much better to have not even have mentioned it.

As for the "world-class car in a world-class company" quote, statements like that always worry me. They didn't use to, but ever since I worked for a company that strived to be "world-class" I can't help but think that the workers will end up hating their jobs. I ~really~ disliked the one company I worked for that really pushed the "world-class" nonsense. They pushed it so much it was like they were trying too brain wash us into buying the whole schpeal. I was probably the oldest worker there that wasn't a manager, so I never bought into it. I still dislike that company and will only buy things from their stores as a last resort, even if I have to pay double their prices.

That company wouldn't be based in Arkansas would it Bret? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

hmmmm... nah... the company I'm talking about has its roots in Michigan IIRC

Well, that narrows it down to one or two that I can think of. I'm glad that I don't at the moment work for some big multinational. Not to hijack the thread, but the times I have, the jobs were barely tolerable.

it's a retail chain...

I don't mean to continue the holdup, but I have the same kinda **** happening at work. Managers are soooo worried about the numbers they have forgotten about the customer. I'll stop now because I'm in a good mood. Catch me when I'm mad..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

So the TF will be sold in the US!! I can't wait until 2008. I drove one in Monterrey, Mexico, a couple of years ago at the MG dealership there. It was a great car, sort of a cross between a Toyota MR2 and Honda S2000, but with that indefinable "Britishness" that defines MG. I didn't have enough brass to foot the $32K purchase or the wherewithal for federalization. So perhaps good things do come to those who wait. Let's hope it's not just an opium dream...

I also drove a TF at the dealership in Quadalahara, Mexico (probably spelled wrong)...I've wanted one since then.

That will be the determining factor for me; how it drives. If it holds up to the reviews the TF used to get, I'll be all over one.

Well, Issue as I see it is while we (the MG faithful) are rairing to see a new MG, are the rest of the country's?

If the pictures shown are what they really are going to produce, it is just another $20,000+ car. Looks a bit like a Dodge Neon.

They (Chinese) will have to have a hook, something to draw people to the car.

An updated MGB, MGB GT and Midget with a variety of options (i.e engine, transmission etc) would in my opinion be the way to go. THe MGRV8 would be a great place to start.

They either need to get the price down, or offer a fantastic warranty (like Hyundai) or something else.

Would I purchase a TF. Possibly. Would I buy a updated B. Absolutly.

heh... I'd like one if they bring it here. However, I don't think I'll be getting one brand new though.

Funny thing is, I helped my MGB's POs move and fix a washing machine tonight, and they heard the news about MG making a "come back" and wanted to share the news with me. Unfortunately for them, I'd been all over this story since I heard about MG going into recievership last year. It made for an interesting conversation, in which I found that they thought MG wasn't selling "world wide" since 1980. Apparently, in their minds it's not world wide unless it's being sold in the US too. Either way, they seemed a bit excited about the potential of there being new MGs in the US again. Which is a good thing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My daughter who's definitely not into cars, called me to tell me the news.

I've emailed them to ask if I can pick up a BRG w/Biscuit leather interior at the factory in Oklahoma!

hehehehehehehe
