MGB New member trying to help a friend with his 1980 MGB LE.

Hopefully the cable isn't broken...

On the earlier cars you can sometimes get to the release arm through the front grille. Not sure on the rubber bumper cars.
 
Same latch. Maybe lift the front and reach in. I would make a loop around the release through the front opening and pull.
 
As an experiment on my '74, I tried using a long screwdriver inserted through the grill and could move the latch enough to open it - without damaging the grill. No idea if this might work on a 1980.
If you have already solved this, sorry I was late.
