Hi, all! I just joined your fine forum as I find myself with my third MG. The first was a TD about 30 years ago. My sister has that one now. My second was a '76 B a few years later. It left the family to help pay for restoring a 3600 sq. ft. Victorian home. Recently, I bought another B. It has 73,000 miles and has not been driven for several years. I am slowly getting it roadworthy but am being tormented by electrical issues.

The day I bought it started out fine. I drove 25 miles to look at the car. I took a trailer so I could bring it home, should I decide to buy it. The previous owner had bought it for his wife a few months earlier but she informed him that when she said she wanted a "Sports Car" she meant a Miata! After I took it for a short test drive, I decided to make it my third MG. The seller had gotten it running but never registered it! He is a retired police officer and wanted to be sure the car was put into my name right away. We went to a "licensing store" and I paid my taxes and fees. We went back to his house to load the car onto my trailer. I hopped in and started it. The car jumped to life quickly. I maneuvered it towards the trailer when suddenly smoke started rolling out from under the dash. I quickly turned it of and removed the key but the smoke got worse. I reached under the dash and began disconnecting wiring connectors and the smoke subsided!

By now, I wished I had not bought the car but it was in my name and there was no way the seller was going to give me my money back! Over the course of the next few weeks, I replaced the ignition switch and opened up the wiring harness/loom and assessed the damage. Only one wire was charred and it was on the outside face of the loom. The wires around it didn't appear to have suffered from the heat. I replaced the bad wire and, with a bit of troubleshooting bad connections, got the car to run and drive once more. Almost everything worked as expected...except the gas gauge.

This week, a new problem has surfaced. I suppose I should post it in a new thread, so, please look for the thread, "Ignition Light and Fuel Pump Won't Quite!"

Thanks!

Steve

Hi Steve - welcome to BCF. My first Little British Car was an MGB, and you'll find much help over in the BCF MG forums.

I once learned a valuable lesson: never take a trailer (or cash) when you go to look at a car. And the seller saying "my wife really wanted a Miata" sounds a bit bogus. The guy bought her the MG without even asking any details of what she really wanted?

Welcome Steve! Lots of us MGB owners here.
I'm sure you will get the wiring sorted out.

Keep reminding yourself: This Isn't Just A Car....It's An Adventure! :friendly_wink:

Welcome!
