New member / New car

'65's and '66's were both 1098 cars. If the head on the pictured engine is original to the engine, it's an engine from January '68 or later.
Looks like the original plug wires, though! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
If we had a VIN and an engine number, we could pinpoint it in a heartbeat.

Zimmy - Jack's is a Bugeye....its worth lots more than the Spridget he's looking at!

(Heck, I'm about to get upside down in my '63 Midget!)

Welcome to the site!

I used this info and put it into an excel spreadsheet with an additional column for what I ended up paying for the individual parts (helps keep me in line with the CFO and gauge if I am getting a better deal than what Moss or VB can give me)...this will also help you keep track of your own progress.

Are you kidding? My husband might find it on the computer and then I'd be back to quilting.....I'd put the receipts in a folder and hide it under the bed! Don't know how much I've spent and don't want to know. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonono.gif
I just love the /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif!

nope. no joke. as the old saying goes.....when momma's happy....everyone is happy.

someday I will finally get to the /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

Plan on a total cost of about $10,000, and then it'll be worth about $5500.

But these are numbers off the top of my head.

How true that is. It is a do-able car. Definatally seen worse. By all means tearing it down was the easy part. Its repairing it that takes the work.. My advice would be find a similar complete one and make one from two. Saved tons of money doing mine that way.

Don't go ito the project thinking you can save big money by restoring it yourself. You can get a car off ebay for less money than you will spend on your car, parts and paint. The upside is that you will know every inch of the car, know that it was done right, and have a real sense of accomplishment (Ihope!) when it is done. It is one of those "journey" things, I guess.

Maybe the best solution would be to get two. If one is a driver you could have fun with it while you are working on the other one.

I've got all my receipts, and even ran a Quicken report recently just to add up the numbers (about what I figured). Won't bother to do that again, though.

When I bought the car, the fellow who inspected it for me (a restorer) figured 10 - 15k above the purchase price for a reasonable restoration -- this on a car that needs almost no body work. His number will end up being pretty dern spot on. Wouldn't trade it for the world, though. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Exactly what I did for a short period of time. Im with the group of people here that are too scared to total receipts. Just dont want to know.

If I sold the Bugeye that runs, the Bugeye that doesn't, and the 67 Sprite, I might cover the receipts for the 100-6. NEVER ADD UP RECEIPTS!

On the same note, have you seen the prices on Barret Jackson the last few evenings.

Boy am I glad I did not have to do those restorations for what they get for them.

Welcome Cybertron - glad you're thinking of a Midget - they are much fun. I'm going to suggest you consider it. Partly because you already meet the above criteria - you've got your parent's '54 to love now but mostly because I doubt there is an easier car for a project rebuild. Before coming across Ms. Triss, I had always dreamed of restoring a car and I can't imagine a more wonderful first project than her. Parts are available, inexpensive and you can do pretty much all yourself. Everyone here is absolutely correct that you can buy one cheaper than restoring but they aren't telling you that that isn't the point. If it were only about small ragtop driving they'd all be driving Miatas /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

In fact, we all love our cars and we don't mind that the receipts are higher because they are our cars and we don't plan to sell them anyway. And, when she is done, I will know every inch of the car - intimately. Besides, my receipts are currently spread over 3 years so the hit isn't too bad.

The rusty parts that you show are not structural and the replacements are about $200.00. If you can do some MIG welding (I can't) you're already 1/2 way there. To my mind the difference between 300-600 is not much over the restoration of a car. Yes, it's a little inconvenient getting one partly dismantled but it will be fun.

So, welcome and go for it! You can't find a car with more fun per dollar or a group with more fun per post.

I totally agree: if I wanted to drive Somebody Else's Car I would have bought one on eBay. Now, when I drive My Car (getting closer every day) it really will be my car.
