It looks like somebody has done some prior body work on it (to repair rust by the vent window). I don't think they completely eliminated the rust because it looks and sounds like the metal is almost completely rusted out underneith the paint.

It's a crack of doom under that filler... I have one... As do most MGB guys with daily drivers... Heres mine...

Haha, that looks exactly the crack in my door...only mine is british racing green! I don't know whether to be excited or worried.

who has the pictures of the crack of doom gone unchecked?


that crack will keep coming back unless you reinforce the door skin in that area when you repair the crack.

ah... here we go... found the picture... mind you this is in jest... but I've no idea if that big crack on the door is faked or if it's real.....

I found the best thing to do to repair those cracks in the doors that I guess 85% of all "B"s have,is to put a small plate behind the crack and mig weld the crack and plate at the same time. Grind the weld even with the face of the door and it not only looks like new, It's a lot stronger and I doubt that the crack will ever come back. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif PJ

& check the angle of your windshield where it meets the vent window

...& never close the door by pulling on the vent window

You can FUSOR glue a piece of metal behind it too (instead of welding)... First step is drill a small hole at the end of the cracl so it doesn't keep spreading.

When I replace the door, should I weld a plate where the crack forms or be careful with the door and hope for the best?

And on the door topic, I am having a heck of a time getting doors off. I can't budge the screws/bolts that hold it on and they are starting to strip out like they are made of lead. Should I just drill them out or am I missing something?

Are you useing phillips screwdrivers or Posidrive screwdrivers? You'll strip 'em everytime if your using phillips - they're not phillips screws - they're posidrive screws. Get a set of posidrive screwdrivers and bits... All of the screws on the car are posidrive.

Oh, and PB blaster is your friend - buy a couple cans and soak them bolts/screw/nuts down with it at least a day before trying to loosen them.

An impact driver with Posi bits works well, too. Almost a necessity with the door screws the first time. Use Anti-Seize on re-assembly and the NEXT owner won't need to struggle as hard! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Yeah, I didn't think of the impact driver... Even one of the simple ones that you hit with a hammer will work. You can get one for about $25 at a motorcycle shop. I gotta get me another one one day (lost my old one).

Harbor Freight has them - pretty cheap too

Like Kenny said, use posi bit not screwdriver...it'll screw them up (unless you have one of the BIG Phillips screwdrivers from Craftsman - they fit nice & tight but you can't use impact.
