new member from Pomona, CA

hey all i'm a new member. I ran into this forum after i kept searching since spritespot didn't add me as a member. I'm from pomona, ca and i own a 1958 austin-healey sprite bugeye. I have the 948cc a-series in my micro machine.

I tried restoring while i was in high school but ended up broke. now that i have a college degree and a decent job i restarted the project. the car in its entirety is a real challenge because its been sitting for over 15 years.

anyone near pomona, ca?
also i'm looking for a bonnet with bugeye and all. the a-hole that owned my car before my grandfather decided to test aerodynamics on my car by removing the bugeye look. how disgusting.

Welcome from Sacramento! While the 948 doesn't have the grunt of a 1275, I think it's the sweetest running of all the A-series motors. I've got a '65 MIdget with the 1098, but I used to have a Morris Minor that had the 948 in it and was later swapped with a 1275. I liked the 948 better in every situation other than the freeway.

Although I'll have to tell you, even though you have the degree and a good job, you'll still wind up broke! ;-)

The rule of thumb on your own restoration is to start out by tallying up absolutely every single part you'll need to finish the car, including paint and bodywork, then make up a schedule for the restoration so you have some goals, then take both of those figures and plan that it will cost twice as much and take three times as long. ;-)

My other rule of thumb is that under no circumstances do you ever, ever add up all of your receipts.

But I'm sure you will be hooked for life. There isn't quite the feeling of rebuilding a car and getting it back on the road. It truly becomes your car- you know and can picture every nut and bolt and every noise and rattle and squeak. It's a great feeling. Plus the Bugeye is the best street legal go kart around.

haven't been on this post for a little while.. thanks again guys for the support and suggestions. well i think my plans to rebuild and restore will be on another break. I'll try my best to keep going affordably. I think my research will probably be the best i can do for now until i can continue with the car. It turns out that I'm going to be moving probably sooner than expected since the city of Pomona wants to buy our house. I'm currently renting at my parents so it saved me a lot of money, which allowed me to begin the project, but since i don't want to live with them after the buy out, i'll be looking for a house of my own.

we'll see what happens. I'll be on here though see you all around!
