It's time to replace my Dell Inspiron 1545. I use it for web browsing and word processing. No gaming or video except for watching Youtube vids. My son has suggested a Chromebook, but since I write articles for publication, I'm worried about losing microsoft word processing. I know there's some computer geeks around here that might be able to recommend a decent laptop for about $500. Any suggestions?
 
Equipment-wise I'd get a solid-state drive (no hard-drive). Super fast boot and one less mechanical thing to fail. It will be tough to stay under $500, but I think you could come in at about that price.
 
I've had good luck with Toshibas and they have some in your price range.
 
Go to Best Buy and get this week's loss leader - they are so ubiquitous - at that level just get what is on sale
 
I have been using Acer Aspire one's for a while ( I have 3 ) very good prices. 299 -499 etc.
Running win 10 on one and Ubuntu on the other two. This is another subject where you are going
to get lots of opinions. Wife works at Best Buy and sees a lot of Asus and Lenovo go out the door.
 
I'd be mostly concerned about "entry level" ones being as slow as mud. I have one (a Dell). :p

I find everything pretty quick anymore - get a decent amount of RAM and the largest hard drive - probably the second from the bottom. :smile:
 
Like Mickey, I'm on a Toshiba lap top, mine is a Satellite 855D 650 Gig hd and now running Windows 10. Works just fine. My Dell has Linux in it because with Windows it's slow and Linux flies in it. Not all computers are created equal. :encouragement: PJ
 
In the past I always had good luck with HP products. Most of that stuff I bought is now in the antique museum! :highly_amused:
My son bought one for his work in electrical engineering with a SSD in it and all I know about it is it's lightning fast
