New iPhone I really didn't want

I have had an iPhone 5 for about 4 years now and was perfectly happy with it. No desire to upgrade since it did everything I needed and then some. However, yesterday the front screen started to separate from the body (see pic). I'm told it is due to a bad battery that starts to swell up and pushed the screen away from the body of the phone. Anyway, out of necessity I upgraded to the iPhone 7 today (base model not the Plus)

I just "upgraded" from my Motorola Razr; found a Razr-3 on E-Bay for $30... :smirk:

when my Motorola flip-phone died, Consumer Cellular upgraded me to a new flip-phone.
Makes calls, just like the old one did.

Manual chokes, crank up windows, carburettors, points, vacuum tubes..flip phones and XP. I'm set.

I had the dreaded "bulging battery" in my 5 four weeks ago (the phone is 4 years old). Bought a replacement battery on ebay...and with the help from of a you tube video...It's as good as new.

I finally dumped my iphone (got so tired of the daily update/upgrade harassment ) for an eBay LG.

it's more civilized, but not as user friendly.

I wish I had my old flip phone back, the wife talked me into getting an iphone and to me, it's a PITA! I use a phone to talk on nothing else. My old flip phone could be operated with one hand without even looking at it, only advantage of the iphone to me is, it hooks up to the new trucks wireless phone system. PJ

I love my iPhone I'm almost totally free from my office now
the time it saves me and the freedom i love it

Hmmm, I still have that phone, maybe it could be salvaged as an emergency backup. Had the front screen on your phone separated?

I can understand that sentiment, but I guess it all depends on what your needs are. For me, with the forum and my NAMI work, I really need to have ready access to the web and email.

One of the many things I use my iPhone for is approving new members on the forum when I'm away from home. I always vet every new member and have to manually approve them (to keep the spammers at bay). When a new member registers, it is very convenient to get an email on my iPhone, then can immediately go into my admin section and check/approve them so they can get quick access to the forum.

Yes. Mine looked pretty much like yours. I think you'll be pleased. If you do go this route, make certain to purchase from a seller that includes the two screwdrivers plus the plastic pry tool along with the battery. Those screws aren't like any I've ever dealt with...and have your good magnifying glass nearby. My only other tip is that the videos don't address how difficult it is to pry the battery from the case. There's some pretty stout two sided tape that really holds the battery in.

Could you PM me links to the seller you used and also if you can, the YouTube video?

Never mind I found several videos with that info. Looks fairly easy actually.

Glad someone liked the Razr. I had 2 RMA's going at the same time for that model. On one, the earpiece went bad, they sent me a "refurbished" one that drained a full battery with one 4 minute phone call.

Done.
While I'm here I'll comment...I'm neither a computer geek or a Luddite, but with a smart phone I now do my banking, pay my credit card, do my OBDII analysis (on the newer vehicles) and a bunch of other stuff that makes my everyday dealings more enjoyable.

My I Phone 5 swelled up so I took it to apple and asked if they could fix it and they said no they would have to give me a new phone.
They checked and said my warranty had run out so they would have to charge me for a new I phone 5.
They chaeged me $69. Heck of a deal.

When I was "upgraded" by work from "flip" to "i" about six years ago, I dreaded the change. I thought the iphone would be fun for a week, then go by the wayside like most gadgets.

Boy was I wrong (speaking only from my personal experience, your mileage may vary)! I loved the darned thing, and would never go back. When I work on my TR I can look up something without getting up, I can snap a quick high quality photo for reference. And I can stick the phone in a hole and take a photo of something I can't see. Grease cleans off with a simple alcohol or windex wipe. When travelling, I have a GPS and travel agent in my pocket.

However, I hate the telephone feature! My fingers don't register on the sliding screen half the time, so I miss a few calls only because I can't answer them fast enough. Worse if I'm wearing nitrile gloves while wrenching. Give me a flip phone for calls, and an iphone for all the other cool stuff it does.

(Side note, given the photography folks on the site, I realize "high quality iphone photo" is relative... it cannot take cool helicopter shots, for example!)

That's a double edged sword though.
I've travelled for work most of my career & "never " being out of touch gets to be a little to convenient.
also, the whole new reality of driving under the influence of gadgets is sobering (no pun intended)
