Hello all... I have had a terrible relapse of the British car bug and have come here looking for help and comfort.

The first new car I ever bought was a 1972 Triumph GT-6. In 1979 I bought a new MGB. Those cars are long gone but the memories remain. I have decided that I must jump back in. Here is my thought.

For the last several years my "toy" has been a C-5 6-speed Corvette. It is fast and reliable but there are no valves that need to be adjusted or carbs to sync, so where is the fun? So I have decided to sell the Corvette and buy a restored MG TD, A or Triumph TR-3. From what I have seen advertized I should be able to get a good one for what I hope to get out of the Corvette (low $20's).

I am intersted in what you think of my choices, and what is the best way to find one? Go to car shows, internet, etc. I am going to Scotland this summer and would love to bring back a right hand drive, but have no idea about importation. Thank you in advance for your insight.

Welcome aboard. Glad to hear you've come to your senses~ A shame that littlebritishcaritis laid dormant for so long, but it's incurable, isn't it?!

Ditch the 'vette. Get an MGTD or even a TC. IF you want something to tour around in. IF you want something to DRIVE, then get an A, a B or a Midget (for great fun) You could get TWO terrific MGs (or a 'rumf if you are so inclined) for $20,000. Or 3 drivers, maybe 4!

Anxious to follow your 'disease!' James Wilson (on the board here) lives in Glasgow. I'm sure he could help with with the importation laws/fees. Just pm him and tell him the bird said to!

Where you at in the midwest? There's a lot of us here!

Welcome! And you can't just have "one" LBC - hehehehe.

Folks in the UK are coming over here, buying our cars, taking them back to the UK & converting them to RHD....why? Lousy weather in the UK produces lots of rust....I'd look around here for a solid car

oh, welcome & Kenny's correct - you can't own just 1 MG!

Thanks for the quick replys. I live in the western suburbs of Chicago, though I had my Triumph when I was still a Tarheel (N.C.).

Certainly not looking for a daily driver. Something nice for my wife and I to take sunday afternoon drives in the summer. I would love to have more than one, but the garage space only alows for one toy.

By daily driver, I meant something you could drive however and whenever you wanted. A TC, a TD and a TR3 aren't exactly that type of car. They're definitely Sunday crusing vehicles. If you're involved with Chicagoland MG or other clubs in your area and want to participate in rallys, an MGA or MGB would be more suited for that. The members in our club (and the Triumph club) that have TDs and 3s (et al) usually bring a different vehicle to the rallys.

Either way, I'm looking forward to following your search and ultimate purchase.

((As far as garage space, what's that? We have a boat, a truck, my car and 2 MGs...guess what sits outside! I'm toying with converting the house to a garage and making a studio apartment out of our garage!))

I've always been partial to the TF for a fairweather recreational drive. But... it is easy to spend someone else's money. My second choice would be an MGA. I'd take the corvette of the TR3. Sorry. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I like your housing plan there Janel!

Hmmm... One 'em $2000 toolsheds with a bed and a toilet, and a ramp into the end of the mobilehome... Sounding good to me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

What garage exactly... I have 2 sportscars, an SUV, an ecobox, a sailboat... And no garage at all.

Actually, when the trailerhouse is paid for in about 4 years, Then comes some land out inna country, and a large garage/shop first... Then we'll consider building a house. Gotta keep those priorities straight! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually, my father built a nice large three car garage on some land when he retired. He then lived in a pop-up camper inside the garage for about 8 months while he built his house. Not as crazy as it sounds.

Sounds logical to me, except I need a 5 car garage. Only need one of these 4 bedrooms though...

How many MG's could I fit in a 16x80 mobilehome?

[edit] 10 actually - if I leave the end bathroom there... 5 deep and 2 wide [/edit]

I have way too much free time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Bah, buy an old over the road trailer and knock the wheels from under it. lots of garage, and they are cheep.

I think I'd take a vette over any of those.....except a TC....Wow thats the second time thats come up 2night....maybe I should buy a vette? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

actually it's probably becasue I've had these brits so long that I take them for granted.......If I woke up and had a vette instead I'd probably miss my brits

Good save... I was about to call that transport again... lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

I'd have some serious backlash from the wife and kids if I sold the MG's.......although I've threaten to downsize I don't think it'll happen

Why not have one (or more) of each. I know of this '99 pewter coupe that could be swaped for the right Brit.

Welcome back to the LBC life and the Forum /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

That's funny...I bought my current B from a guy who just bought a Corvette and by the time we settled the deal, he already had some regrets. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif

I have a two car internal garage and a 2 1/2 car external garage with an attached "boatport", but still have a Wrangler, a Cherokee and my late mother old Buick stuck outside. Time to down size the fleet? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
