I ran across this site while googling for something entirely different -- ain't that how it often works, though?

I don't own a British car right now, but I do own a '74 Norton Commando, and seeing that you have a Brit bike subforum, I figured I'd go ahead and join.

Back in the '80s and early '90s, I owned a pair of Jensens: a '74-1/2 Jensen Healey and a '76 Jensen GT. Man, I loved those cars. Had to part with both because I lost a job and had also messed up my back and was unable to work. I lived in Southern California back then, and would occasionally see another J-H on the road. Been living in Houston for 10 years now, and I've only seen one since I've been here, a white 73. Used to buy a lot of my parts from Dave Bean Engineering up in Santa Barbara and, of course, Delta Motorsports.

The'74 was stock, except for a K&N air filter, but the '76 had cams in it that gave the motor a lope at idle and Weber 40 DCOEs installed by a previous owner. Both had Pacesetter exhausts, which were pretty durn loud. I recall that, whenever I had to get the '76 smogged, I would have to retard the snot out of the ignition timing because of the cams, so it would pass the sniffer test (no dynos back then), and once I drove it away from the shop, I'd have to pull over and and advance the timing again so the engine wouldn't overheat.

I drove both cars all over the place around Southern and Central California, and found them to be very reliable. Neither leaked oil, either.

Dang, I miss those cars. Now, I drive Volvos. Great cars, especially the 700/900-series, but Jensens they ain't.

To me, the J-H is still the best automotive bang for the buck around -- more smiles per $ than any other car I can think of -- and I'd dearly love to find another 74 or later one day -- when I can afford it.

Back in the late '80s, I was involved with the Associaton of Jensen Owners (AJO), wrote a couple articles for White Lady, the AJO's bimonthly magazine, and even had one of my photos make the back cover. I did freelance motorsports photography back in those days, which reminds me -- I've got quite a few slides of SCCA and IMSA races from Willow Springs and the now-departed Riverside International Raceway that I could share with you guys if you have any interest. Quite a few shots of Minis, Bug-eye Sprites, MGs, etc. A couple shots of the Jaguar Group 44 GTP cars they ran in IMSA.

Oh, and I've got pics of my Commando, too

Best,

Michael
