i just bought a new tank from b-hive and the tank is bare metal. anybody have a suggestion as to what to use, paint vs. undercoating. Which is better? i would appreciate anyones input.

I used rattle can truck bed liner on mine. It's been on about a year so farm, and still looks great.

A pint of POR15 will make the tank last forever...and make sure you get some Metal Prep to etch the new steel. While you are at it, you should POR15 the bottom of your trunk too. The stuff prevents rust like nothing else I have seen. Dries as hard a rock too!

No need to seal the inside of a new tank. Keep it full of gas and it should last another 30 years.

A good idea tho' is to put a inline filter in front of your SU fuel pump, in addition the one in the bay. It's just a simple "might as well" that will help your fuel pump last longer.

ok bruce, butwhere can i find por15? i like the idea of a 2nd filter, makes a lot of sense. when i bought this 76 mgb it had 55000 orig mis, been garaged until about 4 yrs ago, developed a leak in the gas tank and the owner parked it for 3 yrs til i bought it. had it patched, but it didnt hold

Don't coat the inside of a new tank with anything. Eventually, some of that coating will come off and create more problems.

Sounds like a gem...I buy POR15 online at www.por15store.com /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
it is not cheap, but is great stuff. Buy it in the small cans that you can use a little bit at a time, because once you open the can, you should use it all, and it goes a long way. A quart more than covered my tub with two coats. I did the front suspension parts with less than a pint. They sell a cleaner degreaser called Marine Clean which is handy to spray wash anything..get a quart of it too. And the Metal Prep for new or old steel makes a chemical bond that really makes paiting with a brush (I bought some of their throw away brushes for $2 each) eazy to use. Do wear gloves, because the stuff doesn't wash off you hands a takes about a week to wear off your hands /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Check out the special packages they have. I just bought a six pack of small cans and a quart of Marine Clean and metal prep in spray bottles for about $55.

Good luck!
