changed out my stock 4-bladed heavy steel fan for a 6-bladed stagered lighter stainless fan,about $75.00 u.s. the results are quite satifactory-befor change normal running temp was between 195 and 212++.now normal running temp 185 and 190.at long traffic lights it holds 195-198? befor fan change at traffic lights, well lets say i would brace myself for the eruption!in fact it did blow at the point were the small tube runs into the larger hose im sure each car is different,but i would recommend it,its also quiet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
 
Is there a difference in the noise? Is it loud?
I like the idea of a flexing steel fan, but wonder if the plastic fan would be quieter.
 
I had a steel flex fan on my 100-6 and it made a deep wind noise. The Texas cooler on my 100-4 is very quiet. If it didn't move so much air, it might be silent.

As Anthony said, "I'm sure each car is different,but I would recommend it, it's also quiet."

Not all flex fans are the same. The staggered, though balanced, blade arrangement does much to reduce the noise.

The TX fan is not a flex fan, at least by intent, & cannot give the very high pumping ability at low rpm & at the same time, feather to reduce noise & power drain at higher rpm.

To all who are considering a steel flex fan, the fans with four rivets per blade, as compared to the three rivet per blade fans, are better constructed & very unlikely to ever lose a blade.

Sounds like I ought to include this into the next project on my own car. But what is the brand and source of this four rivet flex fan? It sounds like the best of all options.

motorhead67,the sound this fan makes is not loud at all but a bit different from the original it can best be discribed as more of a "whooshing" sound after all it is moving a greater amount of air and i dont find it to be objectionable at all,i dont know about the plastic ones or how they compare,but i did feel real good about the way this stainless one was built,light but robust,im sure what ever you change to it will be an improvement over the old one,good luck,anthony7777-1963 bj7. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Though Dave does not mention it by name I know that he is describing the 6-blade fan sold by the Nocks. I've been running a five-blade plastic DW fan for several years and on Dave's advice recently ordered the six-blade flex fan from British Car Specialties. I just received it and hope to put it on in the next few days.
 
Hi Anthony,
here in the Uk it is quite common to change the original metal 4 blade fan for a plastic 6 blade fan available from people like Denis Welch Motor sport. The change reduced the runnong temperature on my BJ8 by an average of 10 degrees and has eliminated overheating in traffic jams.

yes brian,ive heard of several chaps imploying the plastic type also having great success,i might have used it my self had i not run into the stainless one first,why i was considering an old prop from a musqueto or sopworth camel if i could have gotten one,perhaps on my next trip to hendon field.cheers
