The car did run and drive well - intermittently! It continues to get better as I work on it - all minor stuff so far. When the carbs behave, the engine seems very smooth. It has good oil pressure and the cooling seems good. Clutch is nice and smooth as are the gear changes; there is some play in the gear lever, but I am used to the TR4 lever action. The carb floats turned out to be "sinks" and there is dirt in the float chambers. Repair kit ordered. I found pictures on XKEdata showing the dash apart and the engine/gearbox out. For some reason quite a few wires weren't reconnected and a few have been cut. I am doing a slow reconnect and checking to make sure that there aren't short circuits.
Structural work will be done this winter by a well respected local Jag repair specialist who I consulted before buying the car. Comparing recent prices to what I paid for it, I have plenty of wiggle room to achieve my goal of a solid respectable driver, even with paying for some professional help on repairs that are beyond my capabilities. Aside from the wiring, the car is what I expected and I am very pleased with it.
