Well when my old camera went belly up I was forced to start looking for a new camera. Heres what I chose.

Besides about a gazillion features I'm probably never going to use - the Z650 has 6.1 MP (1GB card), a 10x "optical" zoom and a build in flash. Priced at about $229+ it's got a little over 3 times the memory of my old camera that only had a 3x zoom.

Nice looking dog.

I've got one similar and its great, though I've found the Kodak software isn't that effective for playing with the pictures once you've taken them. I've a copy of Adobe photoshop that seems pretty useful.

Between the camera and the software I can really play with taking "simple" pictures.

Seriously now, hope the camera serves you well, looks good so far. So is the memory card built-in? (that 1 GB of memory you mentioned) Because you can purchase as much or as little memory as you want
 
Ok been playing with it some more here is a pretty good photo from about 5-6 feet away from some roses I got my wife today for her Birthday.

Now I had it on the max (6.0MP setting) and had to reduce it to upload it but it's still pretty nice for a camera in the $200-$250 price range.

Granted it’s all rather amateur compared to a Nikon dSLR but the picture above was made using the "auto" settings (none shutter bug mode). However the camera allows for a lot of manipulation for those that feel daring. F-stop & shutter speed, as well as exposure compensation if it is too light or dark. There is also a pretty cool histogram that you can use to view picture brightness and can adjust before taking a photo.

BTW this is the last photo with the "time & date" stamp!

If I can make a suggestion, try the same photo without a flash. If you have to, use a tripod or even set the camera on something to hold it still. A flash is necessary sometimes but can really flatten out a photo. Have fun with the new toy!
