New Crankshaft Vibration Dampener...

Country flag
Offline
The dampener arrived yesterday and was a bit of a job to install. It doesn't just slip on like the old one, it required being heated in an oven to about 225 degrees F. And it was still a bit of an interference fit (needing a few smacks via a 2X4 before the nut could be used to get it seated).

And DON'T let it cool off before it's fully home!

With the old dampener, I could use my trusty 15" Cresent Wrench on the nut. Not so with the new one (besides the 95 Lb tightening torque stated).

Well, now that I've installed my new dampener, the brand new 1-11/16" six-point Armstrong 3/4" drive impact socket that the UPS man brought today and I promptly turned down with my mill to fit inside the dampener will spend who knows how long (?) in a drawer waiting to be used again.

If anybody else is planning on installing a ProRace Dampener and wants to rent my socket, drop me an E-mail.

Great pictures Randy. Why did you need to replace the dampener? Just curious.

Thanks.

Mostly because it's forty-seven years old and the thought of it delaminating gives me the jidders.

I had one fall apart just while moving an engine around in my garage (stroke of luck, really).

Someone else I used to know had one come apart on his BJ8 while he was driving it. It broke the nose off his crankshaft.

It has been on my list to replace for a long time. Now with the promise of actually being able to drive it soon, it was time. That and the carbs/headers already being out of the way, plus access to and renewing the motor mounts. It all pointed to doing it now.

Hi Randy
I plane to replace my in April in a AHCSD Tech session. Just some questions. Do you have the Engine in the car? Dos the V- shape cross brace clears the old and new Damper if I lift the Engine of the mounts. My Damper doesn’t look bad, but the radial seal is leaking and while I am in, why not replace this Part to.
Thanks Udo

The engine is in the car.
It does clear the V shaped XMBR but just barely. The old one easily clears, the new one requires some finesse to get it over the crank nose.
I had to lift the engine off the mounts as high as it would go (bellhousing to tunnel limit).
