New Car Museum-Philly area

Here's a new car museum in the Philadelphia area.

Lots of nice cars, including some great Brits (I can't believe they have a Squire!)

~Simeone Car Museum

I had picked up a brochure at the Northeast Concours where they had a car on display. Looks like another good collection and museum for the Mid Atlantic region. It would only be about an hour to ninety minutes from America On Wheels depending on traffic, making for a good tour for all auto enthusiasts. I hope to get down soon after the opening.

With MG2008 in Valley Forge being just around the corner, this might make for a great side trip! Thanks for sharing!

Those are some really excellent displays! Nice to see cars in that format rather than side by side by side surrounded by stanchions. That place must be huge though!

Interesting concept!

lifesize dioramas - cool.

Pre-war BMW's!!! OOoooohhhhHH!!

I bet John Profitt was somehow involved in those.

Those life-sized dioramas make those cars look like models in the pix!! Nice presentation though!!

OK....I spoke with Mr.Hurst of the museum today.

Regarding MG2008...

1) Thursday morning or afternoon is an ideal day to do this visit.

2) We can get a group rate of $10/person BUT we must arrive as a group. No individual visits at that rate. We can pay at the door, so there will be no need to collect in advance.

3) I need to notify the museum by Tuesday (6/24) of the possible number of folks committed to make the group visit.

4) Dr.Simeone ***may*** be able to guide us through the museum IF we have about 2 dozen folks in the group....and his availability allows his participation.

All I ask is that IF you commit to attend, that you follow through on your promise!

So...do we do this on THURSDAY MORNING or THURSDAY AFTERNOON. I will take comments/preferences until this Thursday, June 19th.

I will make a separate post for 'sign-up".

Thanks Rick for spreading the word about the Simeone Foundation Museum. I'm the person he talked to - I handle communications for the Museum and have been the proud owner of 53 MG TD #24494 for over 40 years. (And numerous Bs).

We invite everyone attending MG 2008 to come down to the Museum. It's an easy drive down I-495 past the airport (directions on our Web site www.simeonemuseum.org). We have PLENTY of free parking out back (3 acres paved). The Museum is about 75,000 square feet so we can hold a bunch without getting crowded.

As Rick mentioned, to give the group discount ($2 off the admission of $12 Adult, $10 Senior, $8 Student) we would need everyone to come at about the same time, within an hour or so. Just let Rick coordinate to let us know when and about how many.

You may be interested to know that we have the 1934 MG K3 Magnette that finished 4th at the '34 Le Mans. It is completely original condition. If we can, we'll take it out back and let you hear it run around!

Also, if we can get a good group and his schedule permits, Dr. Simeone would like to give the tour of the Museum personally.

Everyone coming to Valley Forge should try to get to the Museum. I can honestly tell you that you will not see a better selection of racing sports cars anywhere in the world - it is that good.

Honey, I GOTTA buy an MG!! W-H-Y????!!! So WE can go on this really amazing museum tour!!

Do ya think that'll fly?? LoL

Rick,
Can other BCF members join your group that day for the tour?

I have absolutely no problem with that. This is an activity separate from MG2008 at this time. The more the merrier.

I would like to have an idea as to how many to expect..I would REALLY like to hit the magic number that would bring Dr.Simeone in for his guided tour.

I'm going to be contacting the museum Monday and Tuesday. (I'll be on the road to Philly on Tuesday...but can make a phone call to Mr.Hurst during a pit stop)

This will be a pay-on-your-own activity...but those who arrive at the museum "en masse" so to say will be able to get a discount as outlined in Mr.Husrt's post.

Come on down!

I will post if there are any changes....but at this time, we are planning on visiting this Simeone on THURSDAY, June 26th with an arrival time at the museum of 1:00pm-ish EDT.

I hope you can join us...and please let me know the numbers in your group (Monday night or Tuesday morning if at all possible).

Cheers!

I received this from Mr.Hurst this morning (6/20):
****************************************************

I’ll put it on Fred’s schedule and cross our fingers. He loves to do this, so it shouldn’t be a problem. I’m also alerting Kevin Kelly, our curator, that we would like to take the K3 out back and run it around. He may have to do some pre maintenance before we can do this.

The Museum is an (usually) easy drive on I-76 (right at Valley Forge / King of Prussia) to I-495 South to I-95 North. On a good day, an MG can do it in 25-30 minutes with no strain. However, the traffic can get backed up unexpectedly, so you takes your chances. Of course, that’s the case in any Metro area.

Once we get an idea of the size of the group, we can plan parking. While we usually keep the back 3 acre lot open to run the cars, we may need to use part of it to park your group. Let me know. We may need to enlist one of your group to help direct parking if we get a large turnout.

We look forward to having all of you here.

PS: I don’t know if any of you noticed, but the collection includes a 1936 Squire. I first saw a picture of this (very) car in Road & Track over 40 years ago and fell in love with it. I liked the lines so much (many feel it is the most beautiful English sports car ever made) that I bought my TD which has somewhat similar lines. There were only seven built, six remain and this is only one of three, two-seaters. The one in our collection is 001, the very first built, and was in the Harrah collection before Dr. Simeone acquired it.

Rick:

I wanted to get attend this, but Moss is still back-ordered on headgaskets and rod bearings for my MGB, so it doesn't look good.
I'd hoped to make a sort of heroic effort and be able to drive the B down there.

I may drive down in the Japanese Elan on Friday anyway...not the same, of course :frown:

But, I have 2 or 3 pals up here in the NY/NJ area who are MG folks and might like to do this museum visit with the rest of you. Do you mind if I send them your contact info? (I have your e-mail from your profile)

Not to worry...a British car is not mandatory. Jimmy Hilton has the carbs from both of my MGCs...my V8 is still in boxes...and the MGB hasn't been on the road since 2002....so Jean and I will arrive in the Nissan 300ZX this year. No big deal.

Yes, please share my contact info. I'll have my laptop with me.

Any and all invited to attend on THURSDAY - JUNE 26th - arrive at the museum about 1:00pm for the group rate.
