I need to install a new camshaft in my 948 BE.
I am hoping I can do this with out removing the engine.
It looks like I should be able to do it by doing the following
Drain remove radiator
disconnect battery
remove head
disconnect motor mounts, jackup engine
remove intake and exhaust manifold's
remove the side covers remove the lifters
pull the crank pulley remove the timming cover
Is this possible am I missing anything?

Thinking about the Kent 276
engine is 948
30 thou over,Maniflow header
and a weber DCOE may try to find a set of SU,s
and a stock little lunged head yea I know but a replacement has to wait till summer.

You can do it without head removal, Chris. All the pushrods and lifters should be kept in order, tho. And really, a lifter/pushrod replacement would be better at the same time.

New lifters with new cam shaft pls.

Chris, it's a lot less work just to pull the engine out. It only takes about a half hour longer to do that than it does to do the steps you've outlined, and makes the job much easier with better results.
How are you going to use the degree wheel on the cam with the engine in the car?
Jeff

The cam comes as a kit new springs lifters cam lube degree wheel the works. Your probley right about getting the degree wheel in there and being able to see it and after looking a little closer I'm not so sure the crank pulley would come off anyway. Oh well looks like Its comming out heck needs the tranny oil changed anyway. Last time i pulled it in about 2- 3 hours the only thing I'm not looking forward to is wedging that darn rear rivergate mount back in the tunnel.

I've wondered about a 5 speed and the 948. How do you like it? Does it have the power to pull 5th on the highway? Always can SC Hehe.

The tranny swap is the best thing I ever did to the car. It shifts smooth its quite its full sync its.. Oh did I mention its quite ? Yea its a great thing as far as pull on the highway in 5th well its a little weak but it does ok on open road and flat.Rolling stop to first is so nice. Even if it was a four speed I would be happy.

Did you have the Datsun rebuilt before installing it? How many miles did it have? I ask because mine had around 100k and I spent the money to have it re-built. When I picked it up, after he had my money, the rebuilder said that he changed all seals, bushings and synchros as part of the standard rebuild, but that " it all looked like new inside when I opened it up". These seem to be stout pieces....

I also had mine rebulit by the guys at rivergate. When I found the tranny I dumped the oil and found a sync spring.I did not have the time or the tools to pull it apart so I shipped off. When I put it in it had a little whine to it in first gear for the first couple of hundered miles then it just started to disappear and is totally quite now. When I changed oil I expected to find something as to the soruce of the whine but nothing, a little color and thats it.I think they are tuff units. Lets face it anything is stronger than the stock crash box. I'll never go back. I have an extra one in the attic of the garage just in case.I really doubt I will be the one to drag it out.

I have found several 5 speeds through the last several yrs and I think second syncro is the part that gets a little worn. That being said, it still is really good in comparison to what it replaces. I haven't had any of them rebuilt. I drove a mostly stock 1275 for maybe 5 yrs and I had to down shift on steeper hills if I wasn't pulling about 4,000 rpms. Now, that is just not a problem, I can accelerate on almost any hill in 5th at any reasonable highway speed. (that statement did have a cost, however I can not tell you how much fun it is.)

I know what you mean, I have my eye on a couple in a junk yard here in Tucson, same place I got my Ford parts for the MegaJolt ignition conversion. I ought to go and pull them before it gets hot: the cold weather slows the snakes down a bit. Gives an old fellow like me a head start!!

kcbugeye1275
Your 1275 is super charged? Is it a judson unit?
And if it is how did you get it to work. We tried every trick in the book on a 1275 of a friend of mine it did not work very well.It was sold to a guy in the club and he put it on a 948 and it seems to work pretty good.

Couple quick notes on the cam...

1) you HAVE to jack the engine up to get the crank pulley to clear the front cross member if you are doing it "in-car"

2) Remember the step where you have to smash the underside of the heater box to make extra clearance for the Datsun 5-speed? Well as you jack the assembly upwards you are going to need even more clearance, thus even more smashing.
