As I've worked on my Bugeye project I've always used a mechanical means to remove rust, blast cabinet, wire wheel, angle grinder, etc. I've been very hesitant to use Evaporust or any of the similar products until lately and I have a new best friend! There are lots of parts that are chromed, galvanized, zinc coated, etc. that look much better after a good soak since Evaporust dies not take off the original finish. I started off soaking for 24 hours and I'm now down to 2-3 for lightly rusted parts and I'm very pleased with the results! If you haven't tried it give it a shot!

I posted something similar a while ago and used the same word - a new best friend. Evaporust is great stuff. I have not found a downside yet.

For non-ferrous stuff a soak in oil-eater (similar to purple-power) works great too. I had 2 glass tail-light lenses that the PO had glued in with some kind of black caulk or RTV. Soaked in oil-eater overnight and it all fell off. It works great on cast metal too. My wiper motor housing came out like new with all most no scrubbing.
