New Air Filters for Harold

Today I refurbished the air filters that came with Harold. I removed the original pancakes, pryed them apart, and removed the old air filter cassettes. I couldn't find the right size replacement filters (I think these pancakes were bought as a sealed unit and meant to be replaced as such), but I did find some slightly taller Crosland type 806. To refit I had to buy longer bolts and sleeves. I used chicken wire to surround them.

I'm quite pleased with the result.

No idea if they will perform as well as the stock canisters.

I like it, especially the way the filter canisters match the dashpots. Most aftermarket filters i've seen are chromed.

Initially I tried to clean up the canisters to a shine with steel wool and metal polish, but they were too far gone. So I ended up spraying them with a couple of coats of silver car paint.

Well done Julian! They're likely to perform better than they did originally: You've added some 'square inches' to the things. As for the OEM cannisters, feh. Your setup is visually much nicer and pro'lly less restrictive too.

Looks nice Julian. Are you still using the alloy backplates from the original filters? I've heard these function as little velocity stacks and help direct the airflow. No idea if the claim is legit or not.

The "pancake" filters are flat inside. it would be better to have the alloy units fitted as they do allow for a smoother transition at the throat entrance. But it's likely not a critical difference.

Running WOT all the time might make it more desirable tho. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Those are nice "retro" filters - ya done good! Is there some way to use the OE backplates?

They are the approximate O.D. of the pancake ones. I think with a bit of judicious "knobbling" they could be made to work. An interesting idea.

Hmmm ... I need to measure them up, but I think they are too small in diameter.
