Now, isn't the usual position of #1 wire on the dizzy at TDC about the 7:00 position or the TR6?
 
Yes, but the piston has to be on the compression stroke, ready to fire, not TDC on the exhaust stroke.

Do the rotor and the drive dog normally line up?
Here's the slot in the drive for the diz at TDC .
Does this look correct?

Yeah,it does, Don. If the larger portion is on the right of the slot and both valves are closed in #1 cylinder, you should be good to go.
 
Don, just curious if you had the upper distributor housing off of the block and if you shimmed it per the manual when you re-installed it?
