This only half a stupid question. I know a least
some of the functions of this part but not all.

This part was in really sorry shape so I stripped
it down to bare metal to see what was underneath.

There was a Triumph radio in the rectangular hole.
The three holes marked were uncovered when I removed
the outside covering.

Anyone know what goes in these 3 holes? I have no
frame of reference except a few internet photos that
don't show these holes.

Also, has anyone ever rehabbed one of these things?
What did you use? How did you do it?
Mine had a 1/4" layer of urethane foam and some plastic
film covering over major portions of the outside.

What did Triumph cover this thing with in 1969?

hey dale, i dont think those holes are supposed to be there, probably from a previous owner. i think maybe the middle one was for the interior light switch but other than that i dont believe they are supposed to be there. this was covered with foam and vynal like in the lower left portion of the pic. hopw that helps

The three holes are supposed to be there, they were covered up by the factory when the plastic cover was put on. For later cars the center hole was use for the interior light switch but the other two are left blank. I believe that the three holes are left over from the TR4A center support.
As far as the cover is concerned TRF sells new ones.
 
You can add a switch there if you would like.
 
I don't smoke, but added a lighter or rather a "12V Source" to the right side of mine. I have a light switch in the center and the left is still closed up.

The TRF covers are very nice, and not too hard to install although they're not exactly cheap. There is a separate blanking plate for the rectangular cutout if you do not wish to re-install a radio. Those "extra" holes you mentioned will be hidden by the new cover unless you choose to open them up.

I think the center support is kind of a TR interior focal point, and important to have looking sharp on a restored car.
 
It also provides support to the entire body/frame by tying the metal dash frame to the floor pans for rigidity. If you drive a TR6 with out this part, the squeaks and body shakes are really bad over bumps.

Dale, I think that TRF also sells cover kits that will make a frame look like new for DIY'ers. Translation: "The Tinster"

with a refurbish concept that is structurally
sound and a focal point eye candy as well.

I've seen them with custon made leather covers including the piping.

mine has the holes, and the centre one has an interior light switch. The other two are covered by the upholstery.
This was the first thing I had refurbished.
Luckily, or by chance the first upholsterer I called actually had the male mold for the unit. Apparently it is heat shrunk onto the metal and pressed into place while cooling.
I'm not sure what the alternatives are. I have seen a polished metal one, it looked a bit out of place.

Yankee- I was thinking more along the lines
of engraved stainless steel to go with updated,
teak dashboard and toggle switches.
I think I'll check it out...........

Three hours later:

Done deal! I got me a component for the rehab
of that funny looking center support piece.
Engraved stainless steel. 7" by 1.25" way cool
