Should I:

A: Take this tank to be boiled, etched, sealed & a drain plug added for $175

B: Buy this on ebay: https://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/7172-73-7...sspagenameZWDVW

C: Source out a new one elsewhere.

The pic is of the rot on the top of the 74 B's tank. Inside is also a mess.

Personally I would buy a new one, but it is certainly repairable. You can also go hog wild and buy a stainless tank but they cost a lot more. A new steel tank should last another 30 years.

I did what Steve said. Mine rusted out a little at the top, enough for a good leak. I ordered one, installed it, done. If you trust the eBay one, get it and be done with it.

I wouldn't waste my time repairing that one.

I agree with the others. Get a new tank, it will save you aggravation down the road. I say this from experience having a tank repaired on my old Midget, and then replacing it.

Mine's not as bad as this but does have three holes the size of pencil lead. How are they repaired, can I repair?

I had the same challenge a couple of years ago. I bought a new tank and sending unit from Moss and fixed it right...including an extra coat of POR15 on the outside of the tank. The tank Moss sold me has no drain and the sending unit has quit already. But the tank is solid, so I have no regrets other than the sending unit...I wish I had kept the old one, but I think it was rusted onto the tank.

Buy that one, if the shipping costs aren't outrageous and order a set of packing strips from them or Moss, again watching the combined shipping costs.

Well, I called the folks who have the tank on sale for $159.95.....they have several in stock...right now, they're working me a lot buy price.....think I'll buy a few for resale!

That's a good price!

I just hope that the quality is good. $159 plus $25 shipping is a good deal.

So I called about the tank. Real nice people and delivered to my door will be $184 even. 3 Year warranty. I hope it is a nice tank and I don't have any problems with it. Before I install it is there a way to test it for leaks?

I know Tony was inquiring. Here is some info:

Camshaft is close enough to those folks to go have a siff around...

Sniff away. Very nice on the phone. I tried to get it for $154.95 seeing as I was saving us on ebay & paypal fees but she couldn't do it. Fine by mem I'm just happy to get a new tank and it should be here by next weekend. I did asked if it was manufactured in America and she said "North America" I then replied "Canada aye"

She's supposedly working me a price on a dozen...we'll see.

I would definately go with the new tank. If you have the old one repaired, there will always be something in the back of your mind wondering if everything is OK back there.

Tip. The fuel tank on my MGB was still in pretty good condition, but I removed all the surface rust and gave it a nice coating of underbody rubber from a spray kan. It looks good and will prevent rust from coming back.

It is very hard to completely remove rust unless it is truly just 'surface' rust and you can wire brush it off. Otherwise, you can take a shot with POR or something similar and hope it doesn't start corroding again.

You MGB guys don't know how lucky you are to be able to buy a new tank - those of us with orphan cars need to have one made at a cost that makes the tag on an MGB tank look like chump change. I'd be in favour of just replacing rather than attempting to fix. We replaced our MGC tank last year - a non-Moss British product, I believe. I also stuck a brand new MGA tank in the Jamaican, and I think this WAS a Moss product - excellent quality in any case.

I agree in this case that a new tank was in order....however, I'll always opt to have one cleaned/boiled/pressurized/repaired if feasible...the price vping got is the best I've seen in a long time but is still about double repairing one when shipping is included.

Boiling in the radiator shop's acid tank cleans it right up!

I media blasted my last one and then coated it in etching primer and Satin Black Acrylic Polyurethane. That'll teach those rust bugs from mucking me up again.

That looks darn nice! I blasted the tank from my YB and coated in POR15 semi-gloss. It hadn't dried yet in the picture.

I have a 1965 Ford Galaxie Convertible which I am looking to sell and I sent the tank to a place in Albany, NY and it came back resealed and better than ever. I suggest you do the same!
