Need Help...

Hi, Im new here and i need some help. I have a few questions regarding my Father in laws 67 AH Sprite. There are no serial numbers on the firewall or on the motor anywhere. The only numbers on the car are in the drivers side door jam (ABL 060992). Not sure what this means, but Ill be helping him getting this car in Tip-top shape. The turn signal and headlight wiring seems to be goofed up (its kinda like that joke where you ring the doorbell and you hear the toilet flush in the house). All i have is a Haynes Automotive manual to go by but im not sure what wiring diagram to use to check all the wiring.
I have some car knowlege but when i found out some of these cars were Positive Earth (ground), i was baffled. Even the tach (that dosent work, its on the to do list /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif says Positive earth, yet the neg cable from the battery is grounded to the chassis. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Any help or Ideas would be apreciated! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Ditto on welcome to the forum. Look just in front of the crossrail on the passengers side of the footwell and the VIN number should be stamped into the floor (if it hasn't been replaced. Even though the car has been converted to negative ground the wiring diagram is still good.

David, welcome to the monkey house. I think you will enjoy it here, and there are years of experience hanging around.
The serial number plate is on the "frame rail", below the carburetors. It's an aluminum tag, about 1" wide and 3" long. You may have to spray some cleaner down there to find it. Look for a number along the lines of HAN9L XXXXX.

hi guys, thanks for the welcome and the info. I found a rusty little square under the passenger side carpet. Still trying to decypher the code, but it looks like H A M (or N) and then 9 (or S, its hard to tell) then 70564 is easily readible at the bottom. Is there a way i could cross refrence this number to find out which wiring diagram to use in the Haynes Automotive manual. And what MK# is it?
Again, thanks for any/all help!

David, it's HAN9 70564. It's a Mk IV, and one of the last positive ground cars built. The first of the negative ground cars was HAN9 72041.

Thanks Bugeye, that helps a lot. Now for the curveball...
My father in law has been driving this sprite for a while now, but the wiring to the lights (turn signals mostly) are goofed. Also the Battery Neg is ground. I tried to rewire the turn signal unit like it supposed to... I heard the fuel pump turn on and off like the blinker!!! Ideas???

David, that's interesting, to say the least. The fuel pump wire should be a white wire coming from terminal 3 on the fuse block. (That's actually the switched hot lead, but it branches off to the fuel pump.) The other end of the fuse should have 3 green wires going to it. One of those green wires goes to the flasher unit.
The fuse block is the only common point to the two systems, other than the ignition switch.
Check for proper installation of the wires, and corrosion on the terminals. Look on the underside of the fuse block. Corrosion can cause some strange symptoms.

Thanks for the Info Jeff! Going to call it a night and jump on it in the morning with a fresh mind. One thing though, have it wrapped around my mind, makes me wonder if this car is a mix-mash of Pos ground and Neg Ground Electical components (If Possible)... But Ill take a look in the Morning. Thanks again Jeff!

I don't know if this is what you heard, but the fuel pump does click link the blinker. When you turn the ignition on the pump should click a few times and when the pressure has built up should stop.
When the engine is running, the pump will stop and start now and then as it keep sthe pressure up, it shouldn't be running all the time.
