Need help with overdrive removal

J-type overdrive and gearbox are off the car and I cannot separate the two units. Manual says to energize solenoid and use lucas tool L402 to pump oil into the overdrive to actuate pistons and relieve tension on shaft splines and thus release the two units.

Part L402 is nothing more than a grease fitting that fits the 3/8 npt(i think) outlet down by the solenoid. I have searched far and wide and cannot locate a grease fitting that will fit these threads. Anyone have a suggestion on how to solve this problem? Anyone have a grease fitting that will fit the j-type outlet that they will loan to me? I'll gladly pay postage.

Thanks,
Alan

Got to the Buckeye Triumph website and check out the tech section for the three or four articles on J-type overdrives. I'll bet you'll find your answer there.

Nelson's suggestion on the Buckeye site is to use the same adapter that you'll need to check the pressure. Since checking the pressure is an essential part of working on Laycock overdrives, this makes a lot of sense to me. I don't recall what those threads are offhand, but they are definitely straight, not tapered (hence not NPT).

Here is one source https://webspace.webring.com/people/tj/jholekamp/

Mark,
Thanks for the suggestion. I've been thru those documents and while helpful they don't quite hit on my problem. The authors use an old brake line and cut the threads with a die to make a custom pressure valve but that does not work so well in my situation. I really need a grease fitting here to retain the pressure to actuate the pistons.

Randall,
Thanks for your input and the link. I've seen those pressure gauges before and am thinking of getting one for its suited purpose and perhaps the fitting will come in handy with my current needs.

I'm pretty sure that the fitting on Jay's setup has 1/4 NPT threads on the side that would normally connect to the flexible line. You can ask him to be sure. If so, then all you need is a 1/4 NPT by 1/8 NPT bushing (available at any plumbing supply, Home Depot, etc.) and a grease zerk with 1/8 NPT threads (also readily available https://www.harborfreight.com/50-piece-grease-fitting-assortment-67570.html )

Alan:

I had the same problem you are having about three weeks ago. I went to the Buckeye web site and read the article and then discovered that the same information was in my shop manual. I made the adapter and it worked perfect. If you want, I will loan you the adapter. All you will need then is a grease gun with the hose and the oil in it. I used 80-90 weight oil in mine. You will need to remove the connector off of the end of the hose and then thread it into the adapter. The other end of the adaper screws into the transmission. My email address is below if your interested.
