Need help with a new top and the heater

OK, Now that it will be getting cooler, I am thinking about getting a few more months out of my 1971 TR-6 this season.

The soft top that I have needs to be replaced, as I can't see out of the back window. Is this a big job? And can someone recommend where I can get a decent top?? (I see TRF is having a top sale now...)

Also, the heater doesn't work... Could be the blower, but that looks like I would have to remove the center console (again!) and the radio to get access to the heater box..
Does anyone have any experience with that??

As always, I always appreciate the insight on this forum.

Thanks, John

John, If the top is in good shape and it's just the back window thats the problem the window can be replaced at a shop that specializes in tops and such. I had one replaced years ago. Phil

When you say that the heater doesn't work, do you mean there is no warm/hot air or that the blower isn't working?

If the blower isn't working and the switch is OK, you have to remove a great deal of the dash to get the heater box out to replace the blower motor/resistor for the two speed action.

If your blower does work, then check the operation of your heater valve at the back of the cylinder head on the right side. It's what the pull out heat cable attaches to and opens to provide hot water to the heater core in the box under the dash.

First off, determine that the blower motor is bad and not just poor connections. Bypass the switch and run a hot and ground to the blower motor. If the heater must be pulled, I don't believe the tunnel has to be removed. I would disconnect it from the body and heater hoses along with cables and wires. Remove the glove box. It should come out without removing the tunnel.
As for the windows, have you tried a plastic polish. A lot of elbow grease with a good polish could perform wonders.
Several months ago, somebody suggested using glycerin, I believe, purchased from a local drug store to remove heavy rust and clouding.
I'm not certain if it was glycerin, but I sure someone can confirm the product.

I just restored my heater box. I'll post pics tomorrow (I forgot to bring my camera to work).
To get the heater box out I simply disconnected the water hoses at the fire wall, removed the air hoses under the dash, disconnected the wiring to the switch, pulled out the glove box. Unbolt the heater box (3 top & one side bolts) and slide it out thru the passenger side (for right hand steer).
My heater fan had cesed to the brass bushing (rust) and my 1/2 inch water pipes were clogged solid with silt from the fire wall back.
i put it back in yesterday, took about an hour and it works well. At high speed it sounds like a small tornado!!

Craig
