need head information

I have an engine in the shop that is a semi-catastrophe.

At the moment I need several specs that I can't find in any of the shop manuals, including the original manufacturers book.

The engine is supposed to be a TR3 but I don't trust the folks who were in there before I came on the scene.

The head bears the numbers 302137 and D32.

The block number is TS51591E.

I need to know the thickness of a stock head. This one appears to have been milled but I have no idea how much.

The valves appear to be new but the seats have been cut so deeply that adjusting the rockers to spec was impossible. There was a variation of over an eighth of an inch between the stem tips. I need to know the installed height of the valve stem tip from a base line of the upper head surface.

The valves have stems that are 0.312" in diameter which leads me to believe that the head could be from a TR4, but the only numbers that I can see are the cast-in ones as noted above, but I would like to know for sure.

At the very least I know that the push rods are supposed to be the larger diameter ones, 3/8". Three of the ones that came out of the engine were 5/16" and one of those was bent all to heck even though the engine was supposed to have never been fired up.

This is obviously a sad situation so any help would be greatly appreciated.

3.33" stock head

1/8 variation on valves is horrible - can you see variations in the seats themselves?

don't have the link handy, but do a websearch for Teri Ann Wakeman. She has a great site which shows variations in the heads over time - later TR4 at least you could visually tell from the casting.

Thanks for the reply Randy !!

Yep, the seats are really cut in. I am sure that my machinist is going to have to cut the material completely away and install new seats before doing any more machine work.

Your 3.333 figure makes sense. This head is 3.302, so if it turns out to be flat I think that I can stand it.

Thanks again for the search tip !

In other news....

About the cylinder block...

The stamp on this blocks says TS51591E and as far as I can tell, the TR3B motors stopped around 21470.

Do you have any definitive information on what blocks went into which cars?

Jack

Jack, the block and commission number are never the same but usually are reasonably close to one another, so your engine is likely from a 59 3A.

Thanks Randy !

At least THAT fits the picture. The car is supposed to be a 59.

I still need the metric of the valve tip from the top head surface if I am going to get back to anything close to the OEM rocker geometry.

If you run across it please let me know.

For the record....The body is down in Hickory being rehabilitated so I don't have the plate number at hand. Is the "Commission Number" the same as a chassis number?

Is the chassis number stamped anywhere on the chassis itself. This one is on stands completely stripped.
