Need distributor advice

I'm going to upgrade the distributor in my midget and could use some advice. I have the old Opus system in it now, and I'm thinking of changing over to either the Pertronix Ignitor or the Crane Fireball. What have people here used what would you recommend?

Thanks

I have the petronix in my B and I've been extremely happy. it was easy to install in the car and fits under the distributor cap. For my 1275 Bugeye, I'm going to use regular old points. But check out Jeff at Advance Distributors, he can rebuild your existing unit like new for short bux. He rebuild and recurved both my distributors including putting the petronix in my MBG 45D Eurospec. I would highly recommend you speaking with him.

I've got a distributor from Jeff, I highly recommend him and his services!

I had mine rebuilt by Jeff. He intalled the pertronix unit as well. He set the curve according to motor specs and it is right on!! Hap Waldrop uses him as well. Call him!

I've got new Pertronix distributors in some of my cars, Jeff's distributors in others...

Jeff just did a distributor for my '63 Midget & it is BEAUTIFUL!

Ditto on the Jeff Advice. He won't steer you wrong and stands behind his work.

Jeff has mine right now for a rebuild.
Solid advice.

Jeff has my distributor as well -- for a rebuild, keeping the points. Not seen the results yet, but as you can see he comes highly recommended.

I used the pertronix in my 1098, it took about an hour to install, it worked perfectly. My car was positive ground and I never could get the tach to work with pertronix. I am now building a 1275 and just purchased a 123 distributor, it cost close to 500.00, the pertronix cost about a hundred. The only reason for my change is I want the multi advanced curves the 123 has. My only complaint with pertronix is not being able to get the tach working. I am sure somebody somewhere has the answer to my positive gnd tach problem.

Hello all,

I get the impression that the popularity of electronic ignition systems is to compensate for worn out or incorrect distributors. I don't believe that they do and it is more important to ensure that the distributor is both in good order and has the correct curve for it's application.

Fine if you wish to fit electronic ignition, but it is not a cure all for distributor failings.

Alec, he mentions he has the Lucas OPUS already, that was the stock electronic ignition for '75-'79 Midgets. It was notorious for failing, and was retrofitted with the CEI system later. I haven't heard much good about the OPUS, other than it had a good chance of leaving you stranded somewhere. It was because of a dead OPUS that I came into possession of mine, since the PO didn't know how to fix it. Pertronix has worked fine for me ever since.
