Need a bullet wire crimper

I'm beginning to reqire our '79 Spitfire with the Advance Autowire kit and I need a crimper for installing the bullet connectors. Unfortunately, British Wiring has them on back-order until May. Can't wait that long. Anyone know of other sources?

Thanks!

Ian
You really would be better off soldering the bullet connectors on. It is much more reliable that way. Besides you don't need the wire crimper if you solder /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

I was planning to solder them, but the instructions recommend crimping and then soldering.

I wouldn't bother with the crimping step. Just bend the wire a bit so that the bullet doesn't fall right off and solder away. It will be just as strong that way.

Agreed. Solder 'em. Don' need no steenkin' crimper.

Well, I dove into the project last night and just soldered them. The couple I did seem fine.

I can tell this is going to be a long, tedious project... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonod.gif

You'll only need to do it ONCE, tho!

Ian, if you want to borrow my crimper, just PM me. I have the one that does the proper hexagonal crimp. I crimped and soldered all of mine on a brand new harness.

I borrowed one from Wray Lemke - a member here.

I have installed the same wiring harness. I purchased the crimping tool and found it excellent. Be sure to use bullets designed for crimping and use the correct size bullets.
good luck

I've a running gun-battle with an electronics engineer friend over the efficacy of solder vs. mechanical connections... all in fun, but I s'pose doin' BOTH would kinda negate any argie. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Hence the name Doc.

IMHO, the resistance is also effected by the content of silver hehehe /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

This has gone more to the issue of possible embrittlement at the connections, failure due to vibration and "work hardening" versus electrolytically induced corrosion failure... Not much a "Real World" issue when tied contextually to LBC's. Kinda like the old "How wet is water, REALLY?" musings.

And I think the inevitable corrosion at every Lucar connector in the system would MORE than make up for any resistance in those joints regardless of parent material conductivity or solder inclusions! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

...I've obviously had MORE than my share of coffee today. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

Judges?!?

Doc, according to Packard Electric, crimping alone is deemed sufficient for a factory built harness, but for field repair they recommend both a crimp using the proper ratcheting crimp tool, AND soldering.
I can cite chapter and verse if you want me to dig it out. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Nahh... Th' guys wot wrote it are pro'lly ~originally~ from Warren, Ohio. Wouldn't help my case at all. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Hey Doc, watch what you say about Warren, Ohio! That's near and dear to me. I went through undergraduate EE with many of those "Packardites" and some of them had some decent, practical knowledge beyond just book smarts.

Just kidding, of course.

So was I, John.

Many of my childhood friends are from there, many still live there. It was one of my "stomping grounds" growing up.
I did an internship at Trumbull Memorial (med. photograper), many ties to the place. We likely know people in common, or at least names in common. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Okay Doc, now you have got my attention! I graduated from Niles McKinley High School, US Navy right out of H.S., undergraduate at Youngstown State, and private practice as an attorney for about 11 years in Warren. I did some work for Warren General Hospital.
