I have a few timing chain covers, but how can I tell the difference in the 1098/948/1275 covers?
 
Some timing chain covers may have a breather vent on them but not all. Dimensionally I don't think you'll find any difference... apart from the breather or lack thereof.
 
The 1089 will not have the big breather but will take a real oil seal around the crank rather than the felt pad peice.

So 1275 has the big breather on it.

1098 has no breather but the place for the crank seal takes a rubber standard oil seal.

A 948 has no breather but has a channel for a felt crank seal.
 
hmmm... looks like I have two 948 and one 1275.

Send address to my private/home e-mail - miller64fp@hotmail.com and I will drop you a 1098 timing cover in the USPO. Got plenty. May need a cleaning and painting, but will make sure it is in decent condition and not grease covered.

I use more of the 1275 types with the breather cannister on the front on the A-series race engines I build. Do you prefer external inserted or internal inserted oil seal type? I may have both. I believe the last 1098's had some of the internal inserted oil seal versions. These are like the 1275, but without the cannister.

Oh, I have no problem with the spot that is built in but anything over that is just wrong.

One 1098 Timing Cover, of the externally inserted seal variety is in USPO Priority mail to you as of about 45 minutes ago. You might get it on Saturday. I did have both types, but the one sent was in the better condition.

Good luck with the rebuild. I'll follow the progress and little surprises as you post. Have a good and productive Easter weekend. Weather should be fantastic.

PS: I'm going to check tomorrow, but the 9CG variety of 948 might have started using the rubber lip seal type cover too. I've got a couple of 9CGs and will check it out.
