I just got this one across my e-mail, an article about the private import of a Beetle into the States back in 1946... And the car is still around, recently restored by a VW enthusiast...

Neat story, neat car. If the right one rolled by, I'd have another one. I have had 13 buses, 7 beetles and a Karmen Ghia.
