Neat hardtop

Offline
I spotted this little Sprite at the racetrack this weekend, it had a really cool hardtop for a early car, I wish I had got a photo of the rear window, it was large and slightly convexed, neat little car, pretty stock for a racer, but nicely done.

The very rare Healey "Warwick" hardtop for the Mk II Sprite with sidescreens, with its distinctive rear quarterlights and arched rear window. Note the Donald Healey Motor Company, Warwick badge beneath the rear window. Designed by Les Ireland and produced in 1962, the four alloy works mk 2 Sprites raced at Sebring in 1962 (including Stirling Moss and Steve McQueen) were equipped with this hardtop.

That's the best looking hardtop I've seen yet. Why is it the one you like is rare?

GOOD Lookin' Top!

Almost looks like a fixed hard top. Especially on the one that matches body color.

That is the same as the hard top that I have. I bought my Mk 2 Sprite from Donald Healey in Warwick in January of 1962. Before I shipped it home to the US the following November I bought my hard top and some other goodies. I liked the way the hard top was finished inside. It attaches with tunbuckles to the windshield posts and to the brackets that hold the top bows on the side. There is no external hardware. There is a photo in Horler's book showing the outside. This summer I hope to have the car back on the road and I will probably show the top on the car at some of car events.

Make a mold and start cranking out re-productions of that baby will ya?
Now that I've seen it. It's the only hard top I want (therefore, I'll probably never have a hard top!!)

I wish I could reproduce it but that can't happen. Before I bought the Sprite I was drooling over the Lotus Elan. I was disappointed in the interior finish of the fiberglass in it. It was just a raw fiberglass fibers surface. Mine has a surface that looks very much like a piece of fabric. I'd take a photo but it was cause even more disappointment in anyone who would like one like mine.

Really interesting top, Nelson.

Does it leak while driving in the rain?

It never leaked at all. It also made the 20 mile drive to work in the Ohio winters much easier to deal with. The only problem that I had with it was that it chaffed the paint on the body beneath the rear window. The rubber seal flexed just enough to leave small abrasions in the paint but they were very weather tight.
