The Economist has an interesting article about an oil additive that's supposed to go on sale in December. The brand name is “Clap” (really – I'm not making this up) and it was developed by the “Institute of Nanotechnology” in Moscow.
Apparently, they pulverize a mineral called serpentine into miniscule particles – the stuff is loaded with magnesium silicate and the particles are smaller than a millionth of a millimeter. The idea is to slowly fill in cracks and abrasions in cylinder walls, pistons, bearings, etc.
They claim better fuel mileage (up to 10% better) and I presume better performance. The dose is a half-gram every 40,000 km.
The idea isn't new, but evidently the technology is, and it's supposed to be for real.
I remain skeptical.
