Thats what I was trying to do but you need too much force. It does not have a ratcheting locking mechanism to compress.
 
It is a valve spring lifter or compressor for in block valves. I use one on flat head blocks and L head motors in Jeeps. If it is small enough then it will work on small engines.

funny...mine was delivery forceps...where is my head at! British cars aren't live birth they're hatched!!!!
