Steve (Sup Wit Camel - I love the humour) has a thread outlining his trip to Norway, which got me thinking about a casual dream: ship our Meyers Manx clone VW based dunebuggy to Europe c/w its Alberta plates and leave it there for maybe five years and use it for putting around Europe and then ship it home (this replaces the dream of shipping the Buell over there...)
Any thoughts on how to do this without having to officially import to a country (and pay import duties)? Thoughts on keeping it registered in Canada?
Part of the dream is to have the grandson spend the summer in Europe in 5 years when he hits 18, driving it and meeting people.

When we used to live in Europe most of the people would put their monster gringo cars "on their passport" (listed on the passport). Unfortunately the car HAD to leave the country whenever the passport holder did so it may not be the answer that you are looking for.

well
Norway is not the country to import to
the import tax is a quarter of the value of the car and you have to pay a Recycling fee (to pay the scrap yard at the end of its life)
denmark might be worse.

Holland was easy I just had to pass the EU control and that was that. no import fee.

it might be better to find a cheep one over here ship it to poland for a rebuild and
enjoy

still working on typeing up the story of the drive to norway

there are classic car rental places over here too

Quarter of the value of the car heh. So what is a 50 year old car worth now days.

they actually ask for the sales recipient not just the title!

Well then, anyone need a sales receipt I can handle that.

Lets see 50 years old must be worth 50 bucks.

if only it was that easy,
you also have to get it inspected so it has to be solid.
all lights, and everything has to work no rust and the headlights have to be a specific European type
