TR2/3/3A My wife is going to freak! Another TR3 coming home

I just got off the phone with a widow selling her late husband's TR3. She accepted my offer!!!

Here's the quick story:
I was showing my TR3 at the Triumph regional convention show, when a woman and her daughter came up to me saying that she still had her husband's TR3 that he bought in the 1980s. Showed me a few pictures and then realized I was the auto writer in the paper. She asked me the value, and I gave her the typical "depends on rust, mechanicals etc" and said that by the pictures it was hard to tell.

She called me about three weeks later and I went out to look at it. 1959 car, originally Powder Blue (as evident in the engine bay) but now BRG. Not a dent or dab of bondo anywhere. Hasn't run in over 10 years, because right after the starter died, her husband got very sick. Good top and tonneau, and aftermarket fiberglass hardtop (ick!) Interior has been redone by an upholsterer cheaply, but everything is there and in good shape. Very dirty! One scrape on the passenger door.

So not knowing the mechanical condition, I made an offer and told her to talk it over with her family (not wanting to be a guy who takes advantage of a widow.) I showed her the value guides and explained how I got to the number.

I didn't hear from her for another three weeks, and called her. She said her kids thought it was worth more, and someone else was coming to look at it.

Today she called back to tell me that her grandaughter's husband's friend had looked at it and offered $3500. I asked if I could come back quickly and do a little more poking.

I went back and tried to use a crank to turn the engine, but it was frozen. The clutch and brake hydraulics seemed to work, but the pedal seemed a little hard, making me think that a) the wheel cylinders are leaking and b)the clutch is probably seized to the flywheel.

But I said "I'm going to make an entirely emotional decision to offer to $3750."

She said she had to call the other guy. I said, given the question with the engine, if the other guy offered more, to accept his offer.

She just called back and said "He offered me an extra $50, but I want you to get it."

So it looks like I have a good winter project!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif (Like I need another project!!!!!!!)

I'm hoping to get this one going and give it to my dad to drive. I suppose that even if the engine is bad, I probably can still do okay starting at that price and doing a lot of my own work.

So needless to say, I'm going to be asking for advice, tips from the usual suspects

here's a pic. And it's disc wheels, no OD

Oh man thats cool, way to go Sam. Looks like a nice project. If the body and frame are solid then no worries, the rest is easy in comparison.

If we don't hear from you in a few days we'll know the wife has buried you in the back yard. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Good for you, man. Keeping the torch alive for those of use that can have only 1. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Congratulations, that looks like a great project car. Rebuilding the engine on that should be about the easiest you've ever done, so no worries about the frozen engine bit. If she does indeed burry you in the back yard, I can be there in a week to pick up the TR3s for her.

Sam,

Join the fun! Congratulations on your newest toy! I've pulled all 4 fenders, doors, windscreen, trunk, the whole interior and the front nose piece on my new TR-2 in a weekend! My wife is the one who actually talked me into keeping this one. Send more pictures when you get a chance. Yours is a real find......

Re: My wife is going to freak! Another TR3 coming

You guys finding all these cheap TR-3 are going to make me puke! I've been looking for a replacement every since I sold mine in 1986.

Re: My wife is going to freak! Another TR3 coming

Makes me want more also Sammy, it looks like a pretty nice car, well worth the money. I was thinking that perhaps the starter might be bound up on the ring gear making it very difficult to turn over. I had that happen once. I say this because the whole story just sounds so innocent.

I was thinking that the starter might be bad too...since the widow said she thought that her husband stopped driving it when the starter went bad.

I went today to pay her and get the title and do some pre-towing work -- I sprayed that orange lube junk into the spark holes (after realizing I couldn't really get the Coke in there! Coke is an age-old anti-seize.) I also jacked-up the cars to find 3 out of 4 wheels still turn (front right is frozen.) All will need new cylinders though.

There are a bunch of parts -- three voltage regulators, some tune-up sets, water pump, starter (looks bad, though) and other various stuff. An SU rebuild kit, too. There is a temp gauge, but it doesn't seem to work (too bad, but it's still worth keeping, because it's still a TR2-3 gauge!)

The car also came with every manual ever made -- Clymer, Haynes, Standard-Triumph...everything except Kas Kastner's performance tuning book. And A GUNSON COLOURTUNE. Good, because my other TR3 could use a little fine tuning.

She also gave me a bunch of her husband's old car books, none of which I had -- a couple hundred bucks worth. Great for research for my column.

My friend who owns a tow company said he'd flatbed it for "a hamburger and some diesel." Cool!

And my wife said: "Great honey."

I married the right lady!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: My wife is going to freak! Another TR3 coming

We'll see how my wife takes it. I just made a deal on a TR2 project. (goody goody goody) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Now I gotta tell her, find a place to park it, get a truck and trailer (it's about 5 hours from here) and decide what to do with the TR4As. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sammy, its beautiful, I'll trade you both my spitfires for it.

Re: My wife is going to freak! Another TR3 coming

Sammy, lookin good. I wish my future project looked that good.
Mark, car is still 5 hours away, I'll post pics and info when I get a little closer to bringing it home. Its pretty rough. mainly a rolling shell and boxes of parts. But it looks solid, and definatly a good candidate for a driver resto.
Comission number is in the low 5000 range as its a late '54 "short door"

Re: My wife is going to freak! Another TR3 coming

It has a lot of rough-around-the-edges issues...but hopefully I can address those things (bad rear bumperettes, those nasty seat cushion covers and door panels, the brake fluid resevior. (Yee-haw Ebay -- here I come!)

And by the way -- it's a late '59 TS63644 -- I think that puts it in October.

You are a lucky lucky man! A friend with a tow truck and an understanding wife. What more could man ask for?

Re: My wife is going to freak! Another TR3 coming

Banjo,

I'll await the pics. I'm starting to dismantle my engine compartment today. Gotta love digital cameras, as I will definitely forget where some of this stuff goes 12 months from now!

Sammy: Great find my friend. You're garage parking dilema looks like mine!
