I knew that after a 2 year restoration and the car not being driven in 5 years, I would have some fun when I finally got it back together..Here's my weekend and my TR-6 fun and games.
1. Get up Saturday morning and decide to go put gas in it for the 1st time. Car starts right up, but I hear a little rattle that goes away when the oil pressure comes up..hmmm. I'll check that out after I get a few miles on her I say. On the 3 mile trip to the gas station, the car starts misfiring and it backfires loud enough to scare the crap out of some lady walking her dog (and me!). Another thing to check out soon. On the way back, car backfies and dies. I coast to the side of the road and sit in silence for a minute. Pop the hood, which I have to monkey with the cable release because the new replacement cable from TRF stretches but refuses to pull far enough without disconnecting it from the bracket under the dash. Another thing to fix. I pop the distributor cap and I see the problem. I never tightened up the nut holding the condenser and ground wire, which I now do. Car fires up and runs fine, but now I hear a knocking noise at anything above idle. That doesn't sound good! Got the car home, and with some guidance from some car club members, decide I must have missed torquing one of the rod caps. Only thing I can think of because it definitely sounds like a rod knock. That and everything else is new on the motor! Ha!
2. Early this morning (Sun) I pull the pan down (I'm geetting good at this) and of course, my bad for there is the number 4 rod cap that is just finger tight. Ugh! I retorque all the rest of them for good measure, and the bearing on # 4 looks OK despite my buffoonery. I button the whole thing back up, and now it runs great, no knocking, and I can now move onto the cable release, the OD (won't work), and the passenger door hand hold, which my father in law decided to use and pulled it loose. I thought contact cement would hold it, guess not!! Anyways, an exciting weekend and I think I might make it to a big cruise night they have near me, over 500 cars on a good Wed night. I've never seen a TR-6 there, so it should be fun, god willing!!!
