garage door axial spring broke yesterday. wasn't there to see it, but apparently is broke on the way up and came crashing down. door is about 300 pounds so for now it's staying down. learned a couple of things from this ... never scoot under the door when it's going up or down, if that spring lets loose it could be a bad day the person or thing under it. they say the springs last about 7 years or less with active use. for me that was about right. i didn't know about this failure mode. wow, that spring packs a whallop! now to find a rep. repairman that won't take my house and sprite. not sure if the auto door opener is broken either /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It seems to me that you pay 100-150 to have it replaced (get both done if you have two) don't try to do it yourself!

Good luck.

that's what i was told as well... you have to be careful with this since some repairman will make it seem more than it is and add the danger aspect to scare you. i have decided no to try this myself ... my father has some nasty scars and some paralysis on one hand from trying to load one of these springs ... lessons learned!

well, with the door down and no way to effectively get the tub into daylight, looks like a good weekend to repair my temp gauge!

YIKES! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The doors that have a spring you wind are truely a scary thing. New residence doors have a closed cam that is pretty safe and easy. If it has cables that go through pullies and pull the spring to compression, go to your local store (Lowes, Sutherland, etc) and take a look, you can do it. There is a cam that winds the cable tight in a closed container using a bit and a drill.

My doors have a lever to flip if that happens...then, the door is real light & you can open it with 1 hand.
