MGB My project 72 MGB

Hi all,

Well heres my thread for my new restoration project. Yes the MGB needs alot of work, yes i know it would be cheaper to buy a clean running MGB but, where is the fun in that? I bought this knowing it will cost more to fix than its probably worth but at least once its complete, i can see a finished product. And! another MGB will be saved from the crusher

I was actually looking for my 2nd Mustang when i stumbled on this MG. My wife took to it right away and with me been from England originally, i thought it would be quite fitting to own one of these here in the States.

I had a friend check out the frame and the frame is solid. The floors are the worst and so too that drivers side sill. My friend thankfully can weld and do body work so ill be relying on him alot in this project. If it wasnt for my friend, i would have passed on this MG due ot the rust.

Im sure i will have 100's of questions along the way but, if you can, somewhat enjoy these pics of my junker...for now, lol.

One of the first questions i have is, the heat shield material on the trans tunnel, is that fiberglass or does it also contain asbestos? Im alittle weary on touching that but it needs to go before we do the floors.
Also my wifde wants to know if that paint will contain led or not before we start sanding it.

Thanks guys

Not sure on the paint or the heatsheild, both are old,so I'd treat them carefully.
I've just finished doing the sills,it is a pain. But as you say, another MG has been saved from the crusher.
All of the sill panels and floor pans are available.

Stuart.

Thanks for the reply

Im hoping to pull the trans this weekend once i get a stubborn screw out of the gear stick plate area. I have a feeling this MGB is going to fight me all the way.

Also, ill be ordering my floors this weekend from Englishparts.com. Does anyone have any experience with this supplier?

Thanks!

Don't know them, but as long as they supply the British Motor Heritage parts, as many of the major suppliers do, you're in good shape.

By the way, I have a new center cross member, if you need one. Left over from a restoration from a few years back. Part #17 (457-490) here:

PM on the way

Hey guys,

Just an update on the B.

I have been altitle too busy to do anything major on the B due to work and college.

I do want to thank everyone for there help so far through PM's and in Live Chat

The trans is just about ready to come out and other than that, i cleaned up as much as the loose rust as possible and removed the passenger side door panel.

Im hoping this week, my welder friend will be stopping by so we can go over what i need to order first. I already know its probably going to be the entire drivers side sill replacement.

Wednesday next week, i plan to remove as much as the interior (or the lack there of), remove the trans and remove the convertible top as well as any other minor odds and ends. I did go alittle crazy today spraying PB blast everywhere in generous amounts

I do have a question and thats how do i remove the fenders? I think im not seeing some of the hidden bolts and do i need to remove the windshield first to access any fender bolts from inside the B?

Thanks all

Yup. Windshield pillars go thru the front "wings" (that's English fer fender).

Dale IS English, Doc, or at least a United Kingdomer, er, Kingdomist or whatever, so if he doesn't know wing and fender are the same animal, what hope is there for the rest of us.

I forgot that... Oops.

LOL.

My Haynes manual has a page called 'The Use Of English' that lists all the names for the B parts then translates those names into the American equivalent. Its pretty amussing actually.

Doc - I sent you a PM re: a welder question

Do yourself a favor and get a decent tap and die set to chase out threaded holes. British threads are different than standard I think. but re assembly is easier with clean threads. a little grease helps too. When I did my B (in 1990)I didnt even know what a tap and die set was! dave
