The point of this off-the-wall post is....I bought a Rowenta Advancer steam iron about 2 years ago (yes, I iron) because it is the best German steam iron you can buy. Used by the pros. Last week, while sitting on idle atop the ironing board (about 1100 RPMs), the sucker went up in flames! Literally. Sparks flew everywhere. Quickly unplugged it and called Rowenta. In so many words, they told me to put it where the sun don't shine, it was out of warranty. Soooo, I went back to Bed, Bath and Beyond (now this is 2 years after I bought it), with no receipt, and before I could get the words out of my mouth, the gal at the service desk said, "Go get you another one." There is a Santa Claus.

Oh, and I noticed the lower-end Rowentas are now made in China. Figures.
 
Bill- I've noticed more and more stores now take back
defective "made in China" junk without asking for proof of purchase.

Like- wow! How can you screw up an extension cord for a Christmas tree?
Power in and power out- except no power comes out!!

A few weeks ago our Rowenta iron died - no sparks, though. My Wife went to the same store and came home with a Shark iron. She likes it even better.
 
We have a great deal in my house. I never have to iron and she never has to step inside a grocery store. An excellent win-win for both of us.

The hovel is just opposite Paul's arrangement:. If Horsemits would ~iron~ anything the roof would fall in.

Truth to tell, I don't WANT her touching my slacks... if she irons 'em I look like I'm goin' three diff'rent directions at once: three creases per pantleg. sheesh.

But she's a terrific grocery shopper. A genuine Coupon Maven. She's come back at times having been PAID to buy food... $2.00 back on thirty bucks' worth of goods once. Checkout clerks cringe. She's had managers called to double check the receipts...

Coupons. feh... I can't be bother'd. But SWMBO has an accordion type file folder all organized, she ~ATTACKS~ th' place. Like some sorta SWAT operation. As I type this she's engaged sorting thru a pile of newsprint, diligently filing her little slips of paper, plotting her next sorte.

As for the appliances, I've given up on shelling out money for top line stuff. I buy the el-cheapo gear and when it fails it gets bin'd and replaced with whatever is on sale for cheap. A variant on: "rotate your stock" which seems to cost less over time than having the "Rolex" models. Vacuum cleaners, irons, toaster ovens, microwaves. All disposable goods now IMO. I will admit I'm lookin' at the stainless LG 'fridge line tho... :smirk:
 
Ironing? I seem to remember something about that, preformed back in the fifty's I think, by me mum and me Aunt. Me wife surly doesn`t do it judging by the size of the un ironed clothes pile in tha basement laundry room. {it think it is the pile she occasionaly takes to the D.I. {Deseret industry`s}{ kinda like the Salvation Army only run by tha Mormons here.
Doc, I`m with you on the el cheapo`s law. The last encounter I had with a high end appliance was one a them there digital wahnin` machines. Now I`m a pretty handy person to have around as far as figuring out how to fix broken things around the homeplace here. But that digital critter was frustrating to say the least! It has long since gone to tha "Bin" as you so politely put it and has been replaced by a washing machine that has to good ole fashion knobs and such. Much cheaper I might add and I can work on it if it decides to take a vacation from it`s duties is tha best part of all. The last ole fashioned Knobs and such washer we had before the digital critter, I kept runnin` for the better part of 20 years Until the wife insisted she needed a new one and gave it away to the neighbors {that are still three years later using it B.T.W.}. Spensive isn`t always better I.M.H.O.
I firmly believe if it cost lots of money to purchase it is going to take a technician and lots of money to fix when it breaks!

"Digital" ~anything~ is prone to malfunction on a whim, whether voltage surge or stray neutron bombardment. I can FIX cogs 'n dials.

Phishin' around with microprocessors in APPLIANCES is wasting my time. I can BILL clients for it... I can't pay myself enuff to goof with 'em.
 
Cheapo, eh? Yoose guys are fodder for the WalMart generation. Buy the best you can afford and use it forever...that is, until it lights on fire.
 
I use my iron for laminating more than clothing. Yes, I use the same one for both.
 
Two words:

Lasts as long as anything else, when it flames out another one is $20. No matter WHAT it is.
