My new TR8 and CA Smog [up-date picture]

I'm looking to bring an out of state, fuel injected TR8 into CA. Apparently the CA fuel injected models may have been different from Fuel injected TR8s meant for the other 49 states. Will I be able to pass smog? Tips, advise, don't try it? Register it out of state? (Nevada is about 50 minutes)

Well, I just heard from my mechanic who said that the car will just be smogged to the 49 state specs. and it won't be a problem. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

Re: My new TR8 and CA Smog

I'm seriously envious! Where is the car? Are you having it shipped or are you going for a road trip?

Re: My new TR8 and CA Smog

Welcome to Wedgedom, Larry! Glad you've taken the plunge; you won't regret it.

Just don't let the brakes scare you. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Re: My new TR8 and CA Smog

Brakes? (plural?) That would imply more than 1, I was under the impression ALL TR8's only have front brakes!

Re: My new TR8 and CA Smog

I think that anyone nowadays who finds himself in a crack with an older LBC in an emissions-testing state should just install a modern catalytic converter.

I also remember the inception of catalytic converters & remember how they would plug up & rob horsepower, but modern ones have been proven to be much more efficient & apparently have an imperceptible effect on performance.

My 2nd car from the last 2 years is a Dodge Neon (manual versions were class C SCCA showroom stock autocross champions for 4 consecutive years, until the SCCA changed the rules to make things "competitive" again (i.e., buckled to pressure from the Japanese). The Neon autocross folks are dyno freaks, & determined that removing the catalytic converter had almost no effect on horsepower output.

So if you've got an emissions problem, get a small modern catalytic converter (for a Neon, for instance), & have a muffler shop stick it in there. It will probably run clean enough that you may be able to jettison any undesired OEM emissions stuff & still meet the emissions spec for the year the car was mfd.

TR8's already have catalytic converters. Also, from what I am aware of regarding emissions testing, vehicles manufactured after 1975 not only have to pass the tailpipe sniffer test, but ALL the OEM equipment must also be on the car and in working order and there is a visual inspection to verify that. This is especially true in California.

I'm at work which poses some problems for posting images, But I'll try anyway...

If it shows it is not a great picture, but I received a wonderful video yesterday documenting the car. It has been delivered to the shippers and is scheduled for 14 days. It will be in an enclosed trailer on top.

Whoa! Looks a bit like mine, it does:

That's a beautiful car Larry! I've never seen one with wire wheels ... looks great.

Congratulations!

All you need now is a TR2 or TR3 and you'll have a whole set ... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Re: My new TR8 and CA Smog

Mickey- I'd put your car in a locked garage and sit out front with a load scatter gun. It sounds like yours might be going on a trip.

Re: My new TR8 and CA Smog

Re: My new TR8 and CA Smog
